1. What is one thing you’ve observed within our student community that you think could be improved through the work of the HCA Board?
One thing I have observed within our student community that I think could be improved is misconduct on social media. Last year, negativity on social media percolated itself onto campus and causing tension that is unusual for the Hollins community. HCA Board has done a wonderful job confronting this issue during orientation, but throughout the year, it is possible for students to forget that their social media activity can have an impact on their community. HCA Board has the ability to continue to confront this issue as new social media sites pop up. Even small deterrents such as flyers or adding a sentence about it to the plagiarism reminder students sign every semester. It is so easy for students to overlook that social media, although online, is a part of their college campus.
2. Our most frequent Honor Code violation is plagiarism, and most frequent Student Conduct violation is underage drinking. What do you think is an ideal effective and educational sanction for each of these violations? …show more content…
For instance, if the student has been caught before or if the student was knowingly plagiarizing are just a couple of factors involved. However, plagiarism, no matter the circumstances, is a serious violation against the Honor Code. It is not to be treated lightly but is not to be treated so severely. My ideal effective and education sanction for a plagiarism would start off with a letter of apology to the professor and a talk with Dean Beach or another Hollins staff member who the student can hear about academic integrity.
