American Exceptionalism: The American Dream
The American Dream is something that is unique to America, there is no European Dream or the Canadian Dream, just the American Dream — something Alexis de Tocqueville referred to as American exceptionalism. For centuries, people have flocked to the United States in hopes to attain the prosperity that this country offers. At a time where political figures and the new generations of Americans are leaning further and further towards the idea of Socialism, it is more important now than ever to remember why the founding fathers of this country worked so hard for to build the foundation of which makes this country so unique. And why so many people died trying to make their way to Ellis Island. Today, a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist is running …show more content…
Whereas Socialism, according to the Marxists Theory, is something in-between Capitalism and Communism; A political and economic ideology where the government has almost complete control over trade, capital, land, and the production and distribution of goods. Thus encouraging the formation of a welfare state. In countries such as Cuba and other countries who employ Socialistic practices land is completely owned by the government, unlike America, where the majority of land is privately owned by the individuals of America. In theory, it would be nice for everyone to live a life where they had not financial hardships and poverty could be eradicated. Unfortunately, there will always be some sort of financial inequality in America as well as some form of poverty, but the solution is not income redistribution. Author Brad Thor once reasoned that,” The reason socialism has failed around the world every time it's been tried is because people in socialist countries have looked at the United States and have said if they can have it that good, we can. It's a failed, flawed ideology, but if you ask socialists why it's always failed, it's because the United States has stood in the

The author begins with famous quote lines as a clear example of “American exceptionalism” and the idealistic descriptions of the United States, especially over the last two centuries. As the author notes how American exceptionalism is similar to other nations that claimed exceptionalism as well. He clears out there are no differences between them when it comes to their self-assertion conduct, many which resulted in a righteous attitude that leads them to think they are positive role models to the world. A believe that makes the Americans with their privileges and unique qualities to think they are superior than others, when in fact they are no less different.…

Contrary to Edward’s opinion of a latter day glorious America, we live in a time when American exceptionalism is deteriorating because we boast of a leadership that advocates and promotes division more than anything else. According to the Gallup polls of March 2017, 85% say the nation is sharply split and more than 8 in 10 Americans say the country is more deeply divided on major issues than in the past several years [5]. More than ever before in history, the glorious America that Edwards prophesied is threatened by a nuclear war in the words of Albert Einstein, “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” In the time of writing this paper, China and Russia just shook up…

"Understanding the meaning of American exceptionalism is indispensable for anyone who wants to understand what it has meant to be an American." (Charles Murray) American exceptionalism is the idea that the United States is exceptionally different then other countries in qualitative ways. This theory can be traced to writer Alexis de Tocqueville who was the first to state that America is 'exceptional. ' Many historical figures have used this term in speeches, writing, etc. A popular saying that demonstrates American exceptionalism is "city upon a hill" which was stated by John F. Kennedy. There are two sides to this concept: those who agree and those who disagree. Where does this idea of being genuinely different play a role in the controversial issue of intervening in Syria?…

The United States from its beginning has always been different. It has always been a uniquely free country in comparison to other countries. This is due to democracy and the idea of “God-given rights”. The country itself was founded on opportunity and individualism. These ideas make us different and it is labeled American Exceptionalism. According to Wikipedia, American Exceptionalism is based on three ideas. First, is the history of the United States. It is significantly different from that of other countries because America developed its ideas through years of hardship and learning. The second idea is the mission we have to change the world. The third idea is that this unique history gives us superiority over the rest of the world (2016). Exceptionalism means we are set apart from other countries, however, it is debated whether American exceptionalism is actually real.…

In this weeks discussion, the topic “poverty” made me visualize exactly how poor the lower and some what of the middle class really is. The video that was viewed on Monday was an eye-opening moment, as it presented how the American wealth is really distributed. In my belief, the income of citizens should be more of a linear distribution, rather than a exponential distribution. It is unnecessary for the top one percent individual to be making 20 percent of the American wealth, while the poor class are struggling to even to make at least 1 percent that. For this reason, I would consider my ideal economic system to be Socialism. Socialism helps evenly distribute wealth among their citizens, in hopes that no individual would have to face extreme…

The American Dream is a principle. Our American Dream is not written down, not created by our founding fathers. The American Dream is a set of beliefs that dictate much more societal change than the Government and even the Constitution. Since it is not written down or legalized, it can change, grow, and flourish however the people of this country decide it to. The American Dream does not prejudice by color or origin. It is not constrained by demographics nor can it be classified as a status. The dream cannot be amended, voted for, or killed. American exceptionalism is important in American politics today. Socialism deals with the society as a whole, there are no classes; everyone is involved in the decision making method by a consensus, which allows for everyone to influence the decision (Johnson & Johnson, 2013). I believe that Capitalism has been viciously attacked and ineptly defended. But, even in the nature of the term, it is still considered designed for one designated group, which is the private sector. The government does not have the bias of gaining profits, and the government encompasses elected officials to represent groups with a common…

The variance of many in America is so vast that there is no possible way to pinpoint on exact dream. To expand on the idea that the American dream is conditioned to the individual, a distinguished journalist, Dan Rather, shares a common belief that “There is no typical American and no typical American dream. For some, the dream for one is freedom; for others it is of fortune or family or service to one’s fellows… But however we define it, it defines us as people” (Rather 41). This provides that each person’s ambitions are distinct— different as we all individually are. No person is the same; the definition of our personal dream reflects who we are and what we value. This is because, as individuals, we all experience different lifestyles. We…
