In the poem The New Colossus it says “With silent lips give me your tired, your poor,our huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” This quote shows that the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of hope to the immigrants and they come to live in America to be free or to live a new life.” Another quote is from a letter called What is an American? And it says “They receive ample rewards for their labours; these accumulated rewards procure them lands; those lands confer on them the title of freemen; and to that title every benefit is affixed which men can possibly require.” This quote shows that people that live in America gives them the title of freemen. With this title it also grants them benefits that every man needs. Finally, another quote is from an essay called What is Freedom and it says “The idea they seem to be expressing is that freedom is associated with making decisions, and that other people sometimes limit the number of alternatives from which they can select.” This quote shows that the word freedom can be expressed as people's ability to decide for themselves.
