American Girls Movie Analysis

American Girls is about the story of Dominican Republic family that is living in New York. Sandra and Bautista are the parents; both are first generation immigrants. They had two jobs. They worked on the hospital from five o’clock in the morning and on the evenings they worked cleaning a Doctor office. They did not spend much time with their kids because they are always working. They want to retire and live in Dominican Republic. Their three daughter were born in the US. Monica is the first born. At the time of the film, she was 21 years old and she was on her senior year on college. She was majoring in Neuroscience at Columbia University. Aida is the middle child a 16 years high school student. She doesn’t want to study as hard as her older sister, but she does not want to be as the older kids of the neighbor without any future. Mayra is the youngest, and she was 14 years old starting high school. She loves to hang out with her cousins and the neighborhood
In terms of acculturation, Monica has assimilating the host culture and she hasn’t had enough contact with her culture. When she was child, she didn’t have contact with other kids from Dominical Republic because not a lot of people could immigrate due their low income. She doesn’t speak Spanish fluently, but she can understand it because her parents spoke Spanish at home. She considered her self as American with Dominical Republic roots. Familismo is a core cultural value for latinos that gives importance to the family as the primary source of support, loyalty, and solidarity (). Her family is the most important thing for her that is the reason why she wanted to persuade a medical career to make a lot of money; however, she loves acting. She gave up her first career path when she discovered acting as her passion; she put her familismo aside. Acting is not a profit career as needs a luck factor to succeed.
