favorite songs, and she nailed it perfectly. She is slowly winning over the judges, and America, but I'm not sure if she will run out of time before winning it all. 2. Jason Castro- One of the 2 dark horses in this completion, he is truly his own person, in his own zone, which makes him very unique. Last week, he played a ukulele, while singing "Somewhere over the rainbow," and made it his own. The judges loved it, even Simon. He has a shot. 3. David Cook- the other dark horse of this competition. Last week, he disappointed the judges, and myself, by singing his version of "Innocent." He has his own style though, and may win everyone back over this week. I hope so, he has a very good voice, and style. 4. Brooke White- Brooke won over the judges, and America, when she played on the piano and sang "Let it be," several weeks ago. Last week, she sang "You've got a friend," another of my favorite songs, but she didn't do the song, or herself, any favors, getting a so-so reaction from the judges. 5. David Archuleta- America's new sweetheart. David is very young, and has connected with a very large fan base of younger people. I think he is a very good singer, last week singing 'Angels," which the judges all loved. He could very well end up in the finals, but he forgot the lyrics to a Beatles song a few weeks ago, so he'll never get my vote. 6. Carly Smithson- Last week, she sang "The show must go on," and that almost made her show come to an end. The judges, and America, thought she was very disconnected with that song. She sings well, but has yet to stand out in the crowd, which doesn't bode well for her. 7- Syesha Mercado- A contestant most viewers, including me, thought was going home last week, instead of Michael. Last week she sang 'I believe," which drew an average review. I believe this is her final week.
David Cook is the man to beat for me. I anticipate his singing every week. He has a talent that was evident right from the beginning this season. He has great stage presence and puts everything into his performances. He is an original with the maturity to out shine all the others. This was Mariah Carey night on American Idol tonight. David performed his version of Always Be My Baby. Mariah told him that his performance of her song was haunting. The judges told him that he could make an album or a movie sound track with his song. He's a breath of fresh air because he takes risks. David was in tears after the judges finished with him. You could tell it was from pure joy. I really believe that David will win or be second this year. The only singer that comes close to his ability is David Archuleta. David has a beautiful, pure polished voice, but he is lacking the personality that I think he needs to win. I just didn't feel any of the girls were close to the guys again this week. I enjoy their singing, but they just aren't that memorable to me. I tune in every week to see what David Cook will show us and I am never disappointed.
Honestly, I don't know how country-girl Kristy Lee Cook hung on as long as she did.
Possibly because of her Barbie-doll good looks...but definitely not because of her talent. And we all know the former can only go so far, and American Idol voters proved they'd finally had enough and eliminated Kristy Lee Cook after the Mariah Carey song week. I will admit that the ups and downs of Kristy Lee Cook definitely had me hooked for a brief moment. A record-breaking number of times in the 'bottom three,' yet still escaping elimination; her candid and embarrassing comments to Simon (i.e. "I can blow you out of your socks..."); and little hand-written notes predicting her seat during elimination night... Perhaps that had added to the number of votes Kristy Lee Cook had scraped in to keep her in the competition, helping her escape elimination by the skin of her teeth. But all drama aside, we have to remember that this is a singing competition, and true American Idol fans and loyal voters will eventually prevail when it comes to weeding out the hype vs. the talent. Kristy Lee Cook's performance of "Forever" during the Mariah Carey song night was actually one of her stronger performances. She was able to show off her vocal range while avoiding off-key notes on the softer parts (even though Randy had a different opinion on that), and really seemed to connect with the audience by showing some emotion during the performance. Simon's critique was that Kristy Lee was "smart" but also that it "wasn't great." Regardless, her elimination was not a direct result from the previous night's performance, as many other contestants' eliminations are. Kristy Lee Cook's elimination was a result of an over-time loss of likeability and lack of true talent, and the fact that the remaining American Idol contestants are simply superior entertainers. I will, however, commend Kristy Lee Cook's last performance. She started out her "goodbye song" sitting atop the judges' table, gazing deep into
Simon's eyes, making him look quite uncomfortable as he sheepishly stared back at her with a nervous grin on his face. That was simply a priceless American Idol moment, and it showed a sarcastic sense of humor in Kristy Lee Cook that I would have actually liked to see more of. I would have guessed that Kristy Lee Cook would be one of the ousted American Idol contestants that would quickly disappear after elimination, but perhaps she's not ready to be out of the spotlight quite yet. Major sources, such as E! News and US Magazine, are reporting that Kristy Lee Cook has just announced that she secretly got engaged back in March. Way to keep it interesting, girl! As for a long-lasting career in singing, I'm not sure if Kristy Lee Cook will be a chart-topper, but maybe she'll surprise us all and stick around in the entertainment industry a little longer than we'd all expect.
