The American Orient Express, a luxury passenger train, offered travelers a ‘cruise on wheels’ experience, from 1989 to late 2008. Passengers traveled in lavish train cars from the 1940s and 50s, and dome cars were added in the mid-2000s allowing passengers to travel in style with panoramic, breathtaking views as they traveled throughout North America.
Trips ranged from seven to ten days, traveling to and through continental destinations such as Mexico’s Copper Canyon, the Northwest, the Rockies, Napa Valley, Grand Canyon, Old Faithful, and the Teton Mountains.
Trips included elegant dining – breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner – that reflected the ethnic and cultural influences of the Orient’s destinations, and were prepared by professional chefs.

Historic information is gathered through books, online research and Elgin Courier archives that date back to 1908. Items are also often donated, such as mementos from the American Orient Express exhibit, and old photos that are compiled and categorized into individual folders.
The museum has garnered special recognition for past exhibits, and continues to offer visitors displays of history with an Elgin tie that are sure to impress and educate. Featured exhibits change periodically, and frequent visits are recommended to see what is new.
