American Politics In The 1970s
American Politics The 1970s were by far the most turbulent decade for the United State domestic and abroad. The government was torn in many different directions and the Vietnam War had torn the public in two different directions as well. Throughout the entire decade every citizen of the United States had to question the legitimacy of the government and if they could honestly trust the government. Several events plagued the decade: Vietnam, Watergate, Iran Hostage Crisis, and Stagflation. The White House lost all creditability and none of the Presidents could stop the bleeding that occurred. The 1970s put the United States under the most pressure to perform with the whole world watching since World War 2. The 1970s saw three different Presidents within eight years which is rather uncommon. The first was Richard Nixon followed by Gerald Ford and then Jimmy Carter. The first major event was the fact he inherited the Vietnam War. His campaign ran underneath the issue of withdrawing from the war when elected. His goal was, “Peace with Honor” when withdrawing from Vietnam. That was his first successful moment of President. Détente was a very impressive achievement for Richard Nixon. It eased tensions with the Soviet Union and gave people hope that the Cold War would eventually come to an end. Nixon was the first president to visit China in several decades. Wanted to bring competition to the Soviets and encourage trade. Nixon was a very successful President. His failure does really stand out. One word: Watergate. Watergate overshadowed his entire presidency. It put the white house under a watchful eye of the people. Watergate involved five retired CIA agents and they planned on wiretapping. Ended up costing him his second term and he resigned in 1974. Nixon

President Nixon had been involved in the Watergate scandal and was going to be impeached, but before he could he resigned from office with pardon of Ford. A pardon is legally defined as “The action of an executive official of the government that mitigates or sets aside the punishment for a crime”. Before the 1960’s, Independent voters attracted no attention. They were few in number, and had little significance in any election. All of that has changed beginning around the Vietnam era to recent Presidential elections. Voters were never were equal to begin with really. Everyone only gets one vote, but politicians, campaign and media will focus their attention on particular voters while ignoring others. In recent elections, the emphasis is revolved around Independent “swing voters”. As the country become equally divided and heavily polarized, it makes sense to concentrate on a segment of voters that are believed to determine the contemporary Presidential elections. In the 2004 election, less than forty percent of voters identified strongly…

My time period for the group presentation was the 1920s and 1930s, the boom and bust era. I chose this time period specifically because I always thought of it as the emergence of our modern day culture and lifestyle. I’m also quite fond of the 20s like the TV show Boardwalk Empire. This is a drama set in Atlantic City where the political leadership profits from corruption and bootlegging in the time of prohibition and organized crime. It is also a part of the reason why I chose the time period.…

Many American values that existed back in the 1970s still exist today, even if they may have taken on slightly different forms. An American value stated by Williams, that has persisted into the 21st century is that Americans s\till highly value achievement and success. To this day Americans honor those that they believe have achieved tremendous achievements through their own hard work and dedication. The value of achievement and success does still change from time to time in America, with Americans switching from valuing individual success the most, to valuing the success of a team of people, and then back again. Another value stated by Williams that has not only persisted into the present, but has also grown since the 70s, is humanitarian…

Hip-hop can be described as a culture or way of life for a society of people who admire and love rap, breakdancing, deejaying, and graffiti. During the seventies, hip-hop was mainly the act of the DJs showing off their turntable skills, but it wasn’t until the late seventies and early eighties when rap, breakdancing, and graffiti started to make a name for themselves. Hip-hop is not only one of the most popular genres of music, but it also focuses on the poor or working class by putting an emphasis on hardships and everyday life. The 1970s was a very intense decade with the fight for equality, the end of the Vietnam war, and the Watergate scandal. There are many presidents that have left an influential mark on American society, but one president stands out among them all for fulfilling a successful presidency during undesirable times. Franklin Delano Roosevelt took over office after President Herbert Hoover’s term and during the worst economic downfall the United States has ever faced. FDR acted as the voice for the Americans who were typically looked over in society. FDR was unlike most president because he connected with Americans through his fireside chats that would be broadcasted over the radio. Fireside chats were used to inform Americans of the current events and the decisions that the White House was going to make on certain issues. FDR did a remarkable job of keeping his polio out of the public eye, but even having a disability did not keep him from making such a positive impact on the American economy.…

    Oil Crisis of the 1970s

Why did the U.S. enter an energy crisis in the 1970s? The United States entered an energy crisis in the 1970s for several reasons that were to some point self-inflicted. One of the contributing factors was the United States involvement in the development and arming of Israel. While the Soviet Union was sending arms to Syria and Egypt, the United States via President Richard Nixon was helping Israel defend their boarders and people by supplying them with arms. This in turn caused an outrage within the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) which in turn placed an embargo on oil exports upon the United States because of the aid and arms that the United States was supplying Israel. This embargo caused fuel shortages such as gasoline which in turn caused fuel prices to soar throughout much of the 1970s. This was further amplified due to the decline of domestic oil production and the reliance on imported oil from abroad.…
