How Did Nixon Influence The Domestic Policy Of The 1970's

Pretty much the 1970’s was the 1960’s only it was a new decade. Many different groups, populations, and ethnicities continued to fight for equality. Ongoing protests were still being held against the Vietnam war and anti-war sentiment was growing popular with the American people. Regardless of that, the deeds done by Richard Nixon furthur gave Americans more reason to be sceptical of the government. By the time the decade ended, the disunity felt around the country was set in stone and is still felt today. A new type of belief that came about during the late 1960s was conservative populism, which was the silent majority that felt tired of hippies, protesters, and the interfering government. This silent majority were the people that elected Nixon into office when Nixon ran on the ideas of disassembling those same infuriating factors that the silent majority hated. During the last moments of Nixon’s first term he grew extremely paranoid as to if he was going to get re-elected for a second term. He appointed members of his reelection committee to compromise the trust that voters felt in his competitors. Different jobs included making untrue accusations in front of rival supporters, acting as a supporter of the opponent, and working in the election campaign of the challenger. In the summer of the election year 1972, the FBI found 5 men raiding the Democratic Election office in the Watergate building, hence the name. These men were from Nixon’s election committee and were found wiretapping phones and searching threw office desk drawers. Congress applied 3 forms of impeachment, obstruction of justice, misuse of federal agencies, and defying the authority of Congress.
