The idea of independent thought, which came from the Enlightenment, was very important role in the founding of the United States, because they were breaking away from the oppression they were facing in Great Brittan and wanted to start a new country where they could make life better for themselves where they are able to think for themselves instead of listening to the monarchy they had in Brittan. As in Thomas Paine said in his common sense “ I have heard it asserted by some, that America hath flourished under her former connection with Great Brittan… Nothing can be more fallacious than this kind of argument”(Paine 52). This shows how everyone left so they could flourish by a new start and it was not because of Great Brittan it was the opposite. Everyone left Great Brittan because they wanted, to start a completely new life different from the one they had before. This was a major difference because when they were in Great Brittan they had to follow the rules of a single person even if they were power hungry and were making bad decisions. When they came to America, they started a Democracy, which made the power more spread out so one person could not have total control and voted for their leaders. “The authority of Great Brittan over this continent, is a form of government, which sooner or later must have to end… that what he calls the present constitution is merely temporary”(Paine 54). This was an important idea at the time because it made everyone see how poor the government was and made many want to restart their lives in America as it was just being founded. It was the fact that the government in Brittan could be corrupted very easily because one person was in charge and can do whatever they want without anybody stopping them. Many people wanted to get away from the corruptness so the came to America along with many others.
