The Dutch company profited from fur trade, but not many people came so they let a variety of people in the colony. More Dutch, Germans, French, Scandinavians, and other Europeans settled the area. They also included Africans, free and enslaved. They were friendlier with the Natives, unlike the English. They traded them furs and the Dutch were smart enough not to anger the powerful Iroquois, however the Dutch did have fights with smaller tribes over land and trade rivalries.…
The Liberty Bell, would be one of the most important places in Pennsylvania to me. As described in the book Pennsylvania: History of Commonwealth, it signifies the birth of our nation, independence and freedom (X). I believe it is powerful as it represents many great people who fought for freedom to build…
Jamestown, Virginia was founded in 1609 by the Plymouth group. Their goals were to create a town that had livestock, crops, homes & land for the settlers. At first there was death from the diseases, then when their immune systems built up there become order, governed by Sir Thomas Gates and Sir Thomas Dale. They organized workers, disciplined and sentenced offenders, and gave incentives to workers like ownership of land in trade for work for the company. They also sold stock to adventurers, and also began to grow tobacco to sell and trade.…
The Jamestown settlement became the first lasting English settlement in America. Its foundation in 1607, forever changed the course of history in the New World. With the failure of the Roanoke colony around twenty years before, the creation of a lasting English settlement was crucial for establishing English claim in the Americas. Jamestown not only provided a foothold for future English settlements in America but also became quite profitable. This led to further English colonization of the New World. The colonists of Jamestown explored the lands of the New World, the encountered the Native Americans that inhabited the area, and they exchanged goods and information with the Natives as well.…
What religious turmoil in the Old World resulted in the little colony of Plymouth in the New World?…
Horatio Nelson at a young age had a love for the sea and with help from his family, mainly his father, he was able to start his naval career on his Uncle Maurice Suckling’s ship the HMS Raisonnable. He started as an ordinary seaman which is one who has one to two years of experience at sea and later was able to be a coxswain, one who steers and guides the ship, until he was promoted into a midshipman which would give him training on how he could improve his skills so he could one day be a higher ranking officer. Throughout the years he gained more and more experience from being transferred other ships, to sailing to the artic to find the Northwest Passage, and even escorting convoys. After gaining some more experience he applied to go on a…
The thirteen colonies in the United States are, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Each one of them has their own story characteristics that I’ll be listing them in the following paragraphs.…
The colonists policy toward the native Americans had different origins and therefore different consequences. Much has been written about the encounter of these two cultures, which would sooner or later bring about a painful clash. Because of their so diferent cultures, only one would prevail. The colonists as a group, depending on their beliefs, had a hard, harshpolicy toward Native Americans. Native Americans, on the other hand, structured their lives on beliefs which had no common base ground with the colonists. As a clear example of this, Native Americans believed that the land was owned by none, that the rich earth was abundant for all. As the colonies populated, harsher policies toward Native Americans arose, and the conflicts between the colonists and the Native Americans iscolated. Pennsylvania was probably the ideal colony. William Penn’s philosophy of pacifism made his colony a heaven of respect and tolerance for all. Some of William Penn’s theories may not have been carried out to a full extent, but it did set structured and social implications; this represented a harsh contrast with the policy of other colonies toward Native Americans, and an even sharper contrast of non English settlers toward Native Americans in areas such as New France. All this would establish a part of what would be the American identity.…
Contrary to what many people in this country believe, slavery took place in the North and the South. In fact, Massachusetts was the first colony to legalize slavery. By the year 1700, Rhode Island had surpassed Massachusetts as the chief importer of slaves in the north. Major slave ports included Boston, Salem, Providence, and New London. The tariffs that were enforced upon slave imports were used to pay for community projects, such as repairs to roads and bridges.…
The New England Colonies had various type of religions. Massachusetts had a strong population of Puritans. Rhode Island provided many types of religion for the people settling there. The southern colonies, Maryland and Georgia had no majority religion, so they had various religion such as Protestants, Catholics, such as Jews, But Virginia population was mainly occupied by the Church of England.…
After carefully examining your OPVL on the excerpt, “Gender, Work, and Wage in Colonial New England”, I could find no faults in how it was written. Your origin statement covers all necessary bases (author, primary v. secondary, date of creation) and even ventures further by including a small description of what the source covers. You then transition into extending your source description in your purpose statement. While reading, I became drawn in by what you had stated in your purpose statement, the idea that women at the time had done the opposite of what historians would have expected. Your value was extremely analytical and detailed, as you were able to point out all in which the source had to offer. Lastly, your limitation in itself would…
Colonial development along the eastern seaboard was strongly influenced by the geography of the regions settled and the ethnic makeup of the colonists. Generally, the colonies may be best understood as being divided in the following way: New England (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island), Middle (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware), and Southern (The Carolinas, Georgia, Maryland, Virginia). While these colony groups had many things in common, they also had their own distinctive features. Colonists brought traditions from their home countries and developed new ways of life in North America as they responded to the unique demands of climate, economics, and belief systems. The following is an overview…
For nearly three hundred years before the American Revolution, the colonial South was a kaleidoscope of different people and cultures. Yet all residents of the region shared two important traits. First, they lived and worked in a natural environment unlike any other in the American colonies. Second, like humans everywhere, their presence on the landscape had profound implications for the natural world. Exploring the ecological transformation of the colonial South offers an opportunity to examine the ways in which three distinct cultures, such as Native American, European, and African influenced and shaped the environment in a fascinating part of North America. The colonies were nearly a complete failure, but they somehow they managed to turn…
Both the Zinn article and the documentary "The Men Who Built America" are good sources of learning, but if a reader wants a good source of learning that isn't biased or exaggerated he/she is better off reading the Zinn article. At first glance, the Zinn article is very long with over forty pages. The length of the article may cause a student to shy away from the reading. It may seem like a good idea, but the narrator of the documentary " The Men Who Built America" is very biased towards the characters by describing them as greedy and selfish. on the other hand, the article "Robber Barons and Rebels doesn't give a description of the characters who took part during the birth of capitalism in America. Instead, the Zinn Article gives the reader facts…
One of the original 13 colonies, Pennsylvania was named and founded by William Penn as a place to go for his friends. Philadelphia combined the Greek words for love (phileo) and brother (adelphos), engendering its nickname of “the city of brotherly love.”…
