In the 19th century and in the story The Yellow Wallpaper women were faced with many un equal rights compared to men. Some women such as Charlotte P Gilman was someone who didn’t let inequal rights stop her from pursuing happiness and her dreams. As a young girl Gilman was faced with the troubles of American culture and society. With World War 1 in effect it was hard for any women to pursue her dreams. When Gilman turned 18 she joined the Rhode Island School Of Design to pursue a career in art. As a wife to Charles Stetson, she continued to question if having a family was something she wanted. With the birth of her daughter Katherine she began to write about all the unequal opportunities women were faced with. As a women in the 19th century not everything a women was faced with came easy. With the challenges of raising a family it would take away from the ability for a women to grow. In Gilman’s case she never limited herself to what she could do. …show more content…
The idea of a women was also to be in charge of taking care of everyone in the house. Almost seen as the center of the family. A women’s role was to clean, feed and make sure everyone was satisfied in the house. When a women married her husband they became almost one flesh . The decisions the husbands made where in no subject questionable for the women to give her opinion. Since this was the time period during WWI, when their husbands where shipped off to the war the women would have to take their place in the factories so that they could keep food on the table for their family. When it came time to vote women did not have the right to vote so the husbands vote counted for their wives . It was not until the 1920’s until that right was granted to the women but still they were faced with so many unequal
