Americans have changed Chinese Food The Fortune Cookie Chronicles by Jennifer Lee demonstrates clearly what Chinese food has become around the world. From the history of fortune cookies and the real meaning behind them, to the real history of what General Tso’s chicken really is. Certain areas of this novel may change the way certain ordinary people view Chinese food. Then novel states “There are some forty thousand Chinese restaurants in the United States” (Jennifer Lee). This crazy number is fascinating on how popular this cuisine has become in the United States. To the extent of where a classic American dish American chop suey has been transformed into the Chinese world as chow mien. Chow mein very similar to the American dish is noodles …show more content…
The name does actually come from a General of the name Zuo often renamed to Tso. He was a spectacular military leader. Most Americans only know him for his chicken dish. The name will always live in America for the famous dish that millions love. Its crispy fried chicken smothered in a tangy, spicy sauce (Lee).There are so many different variations of this dish and you can find at almost every Chinese food establishment. This chicken has history and it originated in the village of Hunan. Well Jiang Wei ventured out to find out about where this dish had come from. General Tso received much praise from the village he led and many victories to secure their safety. Ironically enough the dish has the same affect in America it is probably keeping some restaurants in business and many praise and desire the dish as it is the most famous of them all (Lee). Although, when she went to the village where the General was from she didn’t find the dish at the local restaurant. Even showing pictures the waitress had no clue what she was looking at. So that was that I guess that its true and it doesn’t exist on main land. Noted that the food the General ate was most likely not mad by him but rather the servants. So a debate was held in the San Francisco city hall between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Los Angeles side argued David Jung an immigrant from China founded the fortune cookie, and San Francisco argued that there were no Chinese origins and a Japanese man founded it. The final verdict was that Jung in San Francisco founded the fortune cookie. Many believe that this was just favored decision because the setting of the trial was in San Francisco. So now no one really knew where fortune cookies truly came from. After further research the truth did come out and the cookies did end up coming from Japan. By the 1950s Americans ate over 250 million fortune cookies per year.
