Europe was divided into two sides, the Allied Nations and the Central Powers. The Allied Nations were the allies of Serbia and consisted of France, Great Britain, and Russia. The Central Powers were the allies of Austria-Hungary and comprises Germany and the Ottoman Empire. At the end of 1914, the war was at a stalemate. Both sides dug trenches and defended their position for years. Unfortunately, during 1917, communists took power in Russia. This caused Russia to end the conflict with the Central Powers. Consequently, this allowed the Central Powers to focus all of their military on France.
Throughout this whole conflict, the United States stayed neutral.
However, this changed when Germany sank the Lusitania, a British ocean liner. One-hundred twenty-eight Americans were killed in the sinking of the Lusitania. Also, the Zimmermann Telegram played an important part in the U.S joining the war. The telegram wanted Mexico to join the war, and also promised that Germany would help take back their land that America owned. American troops arrived in June 1917 at France and defended against German forces. The battle for Belleau Wood was an important battle that lasted 2 weeks and was won by the U.S. The Argonne Forest was another important battle that helped end the war. The battle for Argonne Forest lasted 47 days. In November 1918 the Central powers Surrender. The Treaty of Versailles was created and signed, it demanded that Germany take all of the blame for the war and also pay heavy reparations.
World War one did not impact the United States too much. But, blood banks and facial surgery were invented because of the war. However, the Treaty of Versailles laid the groundwork for another world war with Germany.
