America's Tension During The Chesapeake Period
In late 1807, the Chesapeake event had caused anger and tension between America and Britain. The tension between the British and Americans had existed since the declaration of independence on 4 July 1776. Over the next few decades the tension between the two nations had become worse. The reasons for this were mainly due to the way in which Britain treated America during the Napoleonic War (1779 – 1815); the introduction of the Order for Council; the Non-Intercourse Act; Macon’s Bill no. 2 and Britain’s interference in the war in which America was fighting against the Native American’s. The change of presidency in America too played an important factor. All these factors were involved in the decision of America declaring their first war on Britain

It was believed that Britain was supplying the arms through Canada. This war was known as the Tecumseh War. Britain had feared that the size of America would become uncontrollable and result in America having more power than Britain. America envisioned a rapid growth in the size of America – and wanted to occupy land that is now today known as Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois. Britain had felt differently as Britain aimed to create a large neutral-status land for the Native Americans. The issue was that Britain and America’s ideas began to clash. The other fear with the growth of America was that America would soon invade Canada which was mildly protected by Britain. With the Native Americans being aided by the British, Native Americans had become stronger and resulted in a large amount of Americans dying in the Tecumseh war. Prior to Tecumseh accepting aid from Britain, the Native Americans warned that if the USA continued to fight for the land which belonged to the Native Americans, Native Americans would agree to create allies with the British.
