The video I watched was Steven Spielberg’s Amistad. This video was basically about slaves who took over a small Spanish ship called “Amistad” and awaited trial in America, which would turn out to be one of the most critical trials in American history. Of course, with Spielberg’s twists, the movie is able to stay very entertaining, while still being very authentic. Amistad may have been a major Hollywood movie, making millions, but the film makers did everything possible to make this movie authentic There were experts in African tribal like and even the “mende” dialect, who would make suggestions throughout the film. All the Africans were all actors from Africa and parts of their culture are scene in the movie. When the African child dies, the Africans are chanting, while the white man says “they must burry him or his soul will haunt them forever.” The Africans were shackled with real chains and we saw their pain and the emotions they felt as being helpless captives against their own will. “Clinque” was the African leader, who showed the anger through shouting and physically showing us his emotions. His behavior/acting helped the audience see how these people felt about being captives after being free all their lives. The African chants were real as they celebrated their freedom. This was a very shameful part in history for everyone and Spielberg was able to make this movie into an informative heart-warming film. The movie made it seem like it was a few white people and blacks against everyone else when it wasn’t that case. One thing that should have been included in this three hour movie is the favor the public of the north had for the Africans. Also, there definitely should’ve been a lot more racism included to show you how black people were spit on back. It wasn’t just the triumph of the defense, but more of a monumental win for slaves everywhere in a way. John Quincy Adams was played very well and even looked like the past
