Good morning all. New aspects or experiences in life are unavoidable for all individuals in the story of “Tom Brennan”, by J.C. BURKE. The concept of new aspects is highlighted thoroughly throughout the book. Tom’s teenage years is a period of great agony and guilt as he is traumatized by the incident that occurred with Daniel and how it affected his life. During this phase he is also trying to find himself after the event that had changed his life forever. In this time he realises in life what is important to him, in this time he also moves out of his own segregated little world, into the larger and broader world. (1)…
if a sense of self-hood is predicated on the sum of personal fears and experiences, then crisis and adventures are arguably the greatest motivators which propel individuals to become the best that they can be within their immediate paradigm. J.C. Burke's novel, The Story of Tom Brennan is a lucid exemplar of the transitional process through which one can enter a new realm as a catalyst for beneficial change and…

When Tom succumbs to his engrossing ambition and constantly chooses work over his wife, he allows it to cloud his judgement in his decision to risk his life for the yellow sheet of paper. Only when he realizes what he has done, and how this ambition has hindered his ability to enjoy life as it is, does he decide that happiness and joy with his wife in the moment is much more significant than work and the possibility for future happiness. Mankind's common obsession over work-related endeavors and strive for ambition often get in the way of daily happiness and experiencing life in the moment. Only when man understands the importance of living life without allowing selfishness or desire to take over, can he truly find happiness within himself and view his entity with…
The point of the story was to show that many people do not know how to change the patterns of their lives despite the big dreams they have. There is no guideline to life coaching. Not every life coach does the same thing. While some people send clients an information sheet other coaches may send a client their resume. Many coaches tend to use more formal assessment tools (Collins, 2009, p.133). Part four of the book looks at the vision of a life coach. Without vision many things would not be what they are today. Gary Collins uses the circus to motivate the reader to have a vision and use that vision to be a more effective coach and leader (Collins, 2009, p. 170). One of the things that the author notes later in the book is using leadership and vision to help move a client forward. It is important to help the client not only set a goal but overcome any obstacles that may get in their way to help them reach their goals. Finding the vision may be challenging and demanding but it is important. A vision has to specific and focuses to the client’s life (Collins, 2009, p. 173). As the book continues the writer discusses some action steps that a life coach can take as well as the many obstacles that may occur during the coaching process as well. The main action step for a coach to develop a strategy and help client set goals (Collins, 2009, p. 206). Life coaching also has…

Lastly, an idea from the textbook that will influence my practice as a human service professional is, that there are many paths to the same destination also known as equifinality. Moving away from linear cause and effect and understanding that the same outcome can come from several different conditions. Having an open system is important because it allows for an interaction with numerous variables. Using the principle of equifinality will allow me to see that problems can occur from a variety of starting points and several factors have also contributed to the problems (Smith-Acuna, 2011, p.…
Throughout my time as a Special Education major, the words “Least Restrictive Environment” and “Inclusion” have always sparked a controversy in my classes. IDEA mandates that disabled students be educated with their non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible but where does the line cross between helpful and hurtful? I believe that inclusion is necessary and on paper it looks perfect, but in the real world it does not always play out that way.…

In order to confront one’s career identity they experience challenges such as having to draw upon their personal feelings, and finding one’s purpose that is different from those around them (Mcllveen & Patton, 2007). Narrative emphasizes the social processes in creating knowledge, connecting it to the individual of such knowledge, and this mode of thinking and organizes our thoughts. The main principle in relational theories is that these relationships are central to human functioning throughout one’s life (Patton, Mcllveen, & Schultheiss, 2012). The language use of this style involves interpersonal relationships for example authenticity, mutual respect, mutuality, embeddedness, relational connections, disconnections, and reconnections (2012). Stages of narrative exploration are as followed: Stage 1 - negotiating a contract which involves asking question such as how can I be useful, tell me why is this important, indentify topics and related issues; Stage 2: exploring the story which involves asking questions about role models when young, hobbies/free time interest, books, favorite school subjects or disliked subject; and Stage 3 – identified goals, agreeing what action is required for example identifying potential…
However, he lacks the ability to adapt himself in his new workplace. Facing the cultural barriers was the biggest challenge, and unfortunately Donaldson was limited at accepting new ideas and was not so creative (lack of openness). Moreover, he was agitated by meeting unfavorable situations, and this led him to carry out his training workshop in an ill-mannered behavior. He failed to conceal his disturbed feelings when facing the situation going different from that he expected (tendency to show neuroticism)ii.…
TO THE INDIVIDUAL social scientist who feels himself a part of the classic tradition, social science is the practice of a craft. A man at work on problems of substance, he is among those who are quickly made impatient and weary by elaborate discussions of method-and-theory-in-general; so much of it interrupts his proper studies. It is much better, he believes, to have one account by a working student of how he is going about his work than a dozen , codifications of procedure' by specialists who as often as not have never done much work of consequence. Only by conversations in which experienced thinkers exchange information about their actual ways of working can a useful sense of method and theory be imparted to the beginning student. I feel it useful, therefore, to report in some detail how I go about my craft. This is necessarily a personal statement, but it is written with…
