A native of Denmark, Jacob Riis moved to the US in 1870 to pursue work. Riis worked as a police reporter, but eventually became a social reformer. He fought to eliminate the devastating slum-like conditions that were present in New York City's Lower East Side. With the use of his book “How the Other Half Lives”, Riis was able to open many of the wealthy residences eyes to how immigrants and the less fortunate lives during that era. Riis himself endured similar conditions when he first made the transition to the states; he struggled with being jobless, hungry and homeless, many nights he copes with thoughts of suicide. Three years later he acquired a job as a journalist working for the New York association.…
Jacob Riis – slum conditions in cities – 1890 How the Other Half Lives p.665…
Jacob Riis' book How the Other Half Lives is a detailed description on the poor and the destitute in the inner realms of New York City. Riis tries to portray the living conditions through the eyes' of his camera. He sneaks up on the people flashes a picture and then tells the rest of the city how the other half' is living. As shocking as the truth was without seeing such poverty and horrible conditions with their own eyes or taking in the experience with all their senses it still seemed like a million miles away or even just a fairy tale.…
Due to the slum being extremely dark, there weren’t any other way to show people how the slums were living, but it was thanks to the new invention of flash for the camera. Through the newly invented flash camera, Jacob Riis was able to show the people the truth of the inhumane living condition of the slum through his picture book, “How the Other Half Lives.” His approach is more like the saying, “Picture is worth a thousand words” and shows them what it’s like rather than tell what it’s…
Though this time was prosperous for certain individuals, the majority of lower classes faced a number of problems. In a comparison between maps of Manchester in 1750 and 1850 made in document 1, we see that the size of the city grew exponentially during the industrial revolution. Robert Southey, and English Romantic poet, commented on the condition of the city after visiting Manchester in 1807, “A place more destitute than Manchester is not easy to conceive. In size and population it is the second city in the kingdom. Imagine this multitude crowded together in narrow streets, the houses all built of brick and blackened with smoke” (Doc. 2). Southey continues by describing the monotonous work and “the everlasting din of machinery” being the control of the city. As an English Romantic poet, Robert Southey could have been slightly biased, but still fairly reliable, due to the fact that he wouldn’t have fabricated what he saw completely, but as a poet he could have exaggerated the details of the situation to reflect them more dramatically. In Report on the Sanitary Conditions of the Laboring Population of Great Britain, public health reformer Edwin Chadwick concisely reports, “Diseases caused or aggravated by atmospheric impurities produced by decomposing animal and vegetable substances, by damp and filth, and close and overcrowded dwellings, prevail among the laboring classes” (Doc. 6). Here, the conditions of the city are directly described as…
Throughout the story, At the Pitt-Rivers, the narrator analyses a “couple” in the museum. He observes the way the couple act around each other and how they communicate. When the narrator first spots the young woman, he observes her and her physical appearance: “The girl was definitely not attractive … she hadn’t got a nice figure; her legs were kind of dumpy and she didn’t have pretty hair or anything like that” (Lively 24). Right off the bat, the narrator judges the woman for not being attractive whatsoever. However, the narrator goes on for being misconstrued: “She still wasn’t pretty, but she had the most beautiful expression I’ve ever seen in my life” (Lively 25). The narrator is stating how, even though this woman may be unattractive, she has the most beautiful expression ever. Later on, the narrator realizes that the reason why she lights up so much and gives off this beautiful array of expression, is because of the man she is with. At this point, the narrator recognizes that the man may be in a relationship with the woman and eventually concludes that they are.…
Despite using essentially the same music to both opening numbers, Sondheim’s lyrics contrasts each other both in theme and in vocabulary that it provides a completely unique atmosphere for the audience. In the opening number “Bounce” it is important to notice the usage of rhyme particularly in the duet portions of the song “You’re hot, then you’re not… Find a new road/Forge a new trail/Bounce” (5-26). In this passage, Sondheim invokes his mentor Oscar Hammerstein’s purpose of rhyme is to give a character intellect and reveal an important motif to the story. In this passage, Sondheim utilizes a combination of internal and true end rhymes to give the audience an impression of an educational background. Beginning with an internal true rhyme “You’re…
The duality in this poem creates an illustration of the poet’s struggle which refers to the rising and falling of the African American culture; Johnson wonders how the world sees African American during this period as a people or things. It shows that the poet is worried about the direction the African American culture will be moving. Men or things is the comparison which is “Do they really think that African American people are worthless than white american people?” So the poet uses the word “thing” it mean that whites do not appreciate and insult African American people that they do not value as a human. It might be a question the the poet wants to ask others if it will take a long time to change their thinking or if it will take great efforts, strides, and sacrifices.…
In Ragtime, a famous piece of American literature written by E.L. Doctorow, Father suffers the fate of being unsuccessful. It seems that Father’s character is depicted by Doctorow as an extremely ordinary upper-class American of the 1920’s. He’s conservative, fairly wealthy, sexist, and racist. He’s an explorer, an entrepreneur, and a patriot. Doctorow uses Father to show us that success certainly cannot be found through money, and for that matter, fitting in with the status quo. In fact, Father’s role as the status quo American – in some ways – leads to his unsuccessfulness. In Father’s particular case, the primary attribute of his that makes him unsuccessful is his incapacity to be a good husband. It is quite apparent that Father could not – or did not want to – adapt to occurrences around him. That, too, contributed to his eventual failure.…
One of the three biggest problems the Muckrakers addressed was where the urban poor lived, which is like today because journalists write articles on poor living conditions in cities and people’s houses. Tenement buildings were crowded, unsafe, and rat-infested. One influential muckraker centered his attention on this problem. His name was Jacob Riis, and he was a photographer for the New York Evening Sun. Between 1890 and 1903, he published How the Other Half Lives, which led to reforms. A quote from Jacob Riis- “Long ago it was said that ‘one half of the world does not know how the other half lives’…. It did not know because it did not care.”…
The massive overcrowding in New York was epitomized by the tenements, which by 1880 housed over 600,000 people within 24,000. This awful statistic was one of many declared by Jacob Riis in his How The Other Half Lives. His work, influenced by other tenement reform advocates, synthesized the cause for reform together into this journal to convince those who were blind to the problem to want to also help. This essay will evaluate the methods and effectiveness of Riis's novel to convince the reader to be moved to help the overcrowding issue in New York.…
I heard “William Tell Overture” composed by Gioachino Rossini. In order to understand in detail of this music, I need to research a little bit about this music and the composer. In the several websites for music, Gioachino Rossini was Italian composer and he wrote 39 operas and sacred music and chamber music. But his best well known music is “William Tell Overture” which is composed in 1829 and led to the nickname “The Italian Mozart” in 18th classic era.…
Working has become part of the norm in today’s society for both men and women in the American culture. People waste so much of their life and time in their occupation, that it seems that is the only part of their life that is significant. Jobs revolve around the world and people are so caught up within them. Human beings are turning away from love and family, focusing on their work and not human life that is meant to be spent with loved ones. This theme of work over family has become a major issue and theme within a few poems. This idea of choosing work over life is evident within the poems “The Mill” by Edwin Arlington Robinson and “The Secretary Chant” by Marge Piercy. Both of these poems discover what working is to that individual and how…
In “The Dream of the Rood”, the unknown poet uses lines 125-156 to develop the theme of triumph achieved by Christ as a warrior king, bringing the dreamer to realize there is hope for a better life after death. The poet develops these notions by the use of heroic diction, symbolism, and irony. These lines are significant to the text as a whole because they allow the dreamer to summarize the sermon of salvation that the rood has preached. They also mark the change of reaction given by the dreamer from hopeless to hopeful.…
Many writers and poets throughout history have touched on the topic of slavery and the woe of those enduring unjust discrimination and racism due to the mere color of their skin, culture or religion they follow. The journey of slavery and discrimination of the black people is a topic that is close to my heart and to many people who feel for the suffering and undeserved bias that is placed against those that are deemed different in any way. In literature, the topic has been discussed in regard to the various concepts based on the experiences and researches conducted by the authors. In this research, the paper will discuss the topic on slavery and discrimination of black people in regard to various writings that have been collected in “The Poetry…
