Reconstruction is where the government try to reunite the Union states and Confederate states as one and help rebuild the Southern states. Lincoln proposed the ten percent plan where only ten percent of the population in the Southern states only had to take the oath to the Union, but the government rejected the plan and went the Congress’s plan. Their plans was over fifty percent of the population to take the oath, but Lincoln vetoed it. After Lincoln’s assassination, Johnson took over with an easy restoration plan where they just have to pay.
The reason why reconstruction ended because the southern Democrats had power over the election of 1876 where they will let Rutherford Hayes win. In exchange that they would withdraw all the federal troops that are currently stationed in the South, give political patronage to the white southerners, and friendly economic policies through the Compromise of 1877. It ended when they had the troop removed from Southern states because the federal troops were there to help the African American from getting mistreated. The federal troops being there help keeps the Southern in control while the reconstruction was happening.
