The main issue relating to Reconstruction that divided Republicans at the end of the Civil War was that some of the republicans wanted to punish the south and did not want them to return to pre-Civil war ways. The people that wanted this punishment for the South were known as Radical Republicans. The Radical Republicans wanted to punish the South because they caused severe destruction and the loss of many lives. Other Republicans believed that it should have been made simpler for the South to rejoin the Union. If I had been a member of Congress at the time, I would choose Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson’s Reconstruction plan. The whole idea for their Reconstruction plan was to reunite the nation. It would have just been simpler to let the…

The reason why reconstruction ended because the southern Democrats had power over the election of 1876 where they will let Rutherford Hayes win. In exchange that they would withdraw all the federal troops that are currently stationed in the South, give political patronage to the white southerners, and friendly economic policies through the Compromise of 1877. It ended when they had the troop removed from Southern states because the federal troops were there to help the African American from getting mistreated. The reasons for this were because there was extreme racism and President Grant ignored the rebuilding for a period of time. Though the KKK and South corruption played a big part of the ending, Reconstruction wouldn’t have ended if it weren’t for the North, because they were the ones still moving it along in the first place with their hope. The North had started Reconstruction, so it makes sense that the North had to have finished it, and it did. One of the many causes of the North ending Reconstruction was because people lost hope. The fact that the blacks were to be free and the nation would start new and forget about the past was all too good to be true. The nation had to find their balance between the Southerners and Northerners where they could have a good…

During the Civil War was the beginning of the Reconstruction era that took place up until the late 1870’s, which for some was a success but a failure to others. Not only was it a civil rights movement but it also re-created the southern way of life, temporarily divided a political party, broke down another, and affected the nation in ways that would have long-term consequences. Two of the three major Reconstruction plans were that of President Lincoln and Vice President Johnson that both sought to readmit the south as quickly as possible. Lincoln maintained that the political leadership of the South had seceded. His plan did not exclude people like Johnson’s did.…

“However, it had seemed that the dream of Reconstruction might be realized.” (W.E.B Dubois). This explains that people, both in the south and the north have seen all the bad issues that happened after the civil war. The civil war has caused a large separation between the south and north. When researching the Impact slaves had in the civil war, I didn't know that even though the north was abolishing slavery and on the brink of war they still wouldn't let African Americans fight in the war until a law was passed allowing African Americans to fight. I can understand why at first Africans Americans didn’t even want to fight. Even in the north african americans were treated like dirt and even when the country needs help against the south they had to pass a law for black people to fight. Another thing I didn’t know was after the war 7 African American soldiers were awarded the act of valor. Thats amazing because it was a step in accepting African Americans as people instead of slaves. Progress was far from over, although the north was working towards fully…

It is human nature to regard someone as inferior to yourself. Time and time again, groups of people deemed inferior have risen up to fight for their rights. Sometimes the quarrel was small, but these kinds of injustices can tear countries apart. The American Civil War had over 500,000 casualties, all of them fighting over African American rights. But whites weren’t the only ones acting as agents of change. African Americans had many ways that they fought for their freedom, in combat and out. These methods changed the African American population and the…
