which were that the KKK in the south was killing and intimidating supporters of the reconstruction. While the North was dealing with corruption and wanted to concentrate on their own problems.
Majority of the southerners were afraid to support the reconstruction because the KKK had too much power over the south. According to Document A , the KKK was responsible for the death of State Senator, John W. Stephens of Caswell. “ He was foully murdered by the Ku-Klux-klan in the grand jury room of the courthouse….” Also as, Document illustrates how an African American man is being threatened at gunpoint while his captor takes away from this freedom of speech. This shows that they would pay you for you to get someone to go to the legislature instead of you.
While in the North the corruption within the government is the cause on why the reconstruction is slowing down. In Document C is saying that they were becoming suspicious and beginning to see as corrupt governments in the south are run by the northern carpetbaggers and freedmen.…. “ Many Northern voters shifted their attention to such national concerns as the Panic of 1873.” The quote shows that the North tried to rebuild reconstruction but lost focus on their original goal. The North didn't care about the people getting hurt in the south even more so as more problems had occurred.
In document D photo is showing how the African Americans are reacting in the legislative office during reconstruction.” Boston Evening Transcript ran a letter… arguing that “the black, as a people , are unfitted for the proper exercise of political duties…..” The blacks felt like they were unfitted for government officials because they been under slavery of so long they didn't know any skills about citizenship.
The Boston Evening Transcript was stating that the slaves did not have the ability to rule themselves or to rules others. The boston letter was racism because they didn't believe that the blacks couldn't do anything since they were slaves.
Do we know who killed reconstruction? Some might say the South killed reconstruction but others will say that North killed reconstruction. Who really knows who killed reconstruction. Both North and south could have killed reconstruction. It wasn't right that the South had slavery and that's the point that the north was trying to make which was that slavery should be none existent. A reason that the civil war happened was to get rid of slavery. Again who killed reconstruction they both most likely had a part in why reconstruction was
killed.
