An Analysis of Moral in Who Moved My Cheese
Who Moved My Cheese?

A Review and Essay

At a time when Rapides Parish schools are once again facing huge financial deficits with resultant changes at almost every level, teachers must deal with mostly unwanted changes. Being a twenty-six year classroom veteran, I have had to change as well in many ways. In my internal search for ways to deal with change, I have recently read a book which has given me some new ways to think about change. I hope that this review might lead you to this book and help you to see how changes, even when first seen as negative and hurtful, are not necessarily a bad thing.

Dr. Spencer Johnson has written a book which gives me some real ways to think about and deal with change. This small book, Who Moved My Cheese, is a fast and easy read but one which can enlighten even a cynical person to some ways to adapt to the inevitable changes of life in its many shifting forms and challenges. Like Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, the story is told as a story within a story of several old friends at a high school reunion told by one of the friends.

The story centers around four characters who live in a Maze and the changes with which they must wrangle. The characters are two mice, Sniff and Scurry, and two so-called Littlepeople (creatures the size of mice but who look and act like people today) named Hem and Haw. The plot is pretty simple. The four characters find a large cache of cheese and can live their lives without much variation: get up, go to the cheese, eat, go home, and start over the next day. This works out okay until one day the cheese is gone. Then the characters must deal with the new situation.

The mice, taken aback at first, are first to take action since they are creatures of almost entirely instinct: they set out looking for more cheese. On the other hand, Hem and Haw, creatures of reason

The phrase “people don’t change for leaders they don’t like” reflects the current turnover rate at Southaven Elementary. Christy Johnston has not developed a strong mission and vision for Southaven Elementary School; therefore, teachers and students lack commitment, due to lack of guidance. She is not in every classroom, everyday. Many of the teacher’s observations were pushed aside until the last days of school, which left them feeling as if their feedback was distorted. Emotional bank accounts were not consistently filled throughout the building, which has led to negativity and resentment. Diversity of multiple intelligences and strengths is not celebrated, and most teachers and staff feel that they are not able to voice their opinions for fear they will not be listened to, or valued. Mrs. Johnston does not know or spend time with the students of Southaven Elementary. She does not know any individuals on a personal level unless they are a major discipline…

The story involves four characters who live in a maze: the mice Scurry and Sniff, and two 'little people', Hem and Haw. All is going well because they have found a huge source of their favorite food, cheese. Hem and Haw have even moved their houses to be near it and it has becomes the center of their lives. But they do not notice that it is getting smaller, and are devastated when they arrive at the site one morning and find the cheese is gone. The mice, Sniff and Scurry possessed simple rodent brains but good instincts searched for the hard nibbling cheese they liked. In contrast, the two little people Hem and Haw, used brains filled with many believes and emotions to search for a different kind of cheese which they believed would make them feel happy and successful. This is where the story splits in two. Scurry and Sniff quickly accept the loss of the cheese and go off into the maze in search of other sources. The little people, because they have built their lives around the big cheese, feel they are the victim of some kind of fraud or theft. Yet this only makes things worse, as their clinging on ensures that they go hungry. Meanwhile, the mice move on and find new cheese.…

They realized that the cheese would not last forever. When the cheese finally did disappear, Sniff and Scurry were ready and started on their journey to find new cheese. These two characters represent the people who accept change and are ready to change whenever the moments come. These people realize that change is always happening. Sniff and Scurry did find the cheese before anyone else did due to their quick judgment to look for new cheese. At the moment the cheese disappeared, Hem and Haw were both reacting similarly. Dr. Spencer Johnson wrote “The little people’s behavior was not very attractive or productive but it was understandable.” To me, this means that being mad about change is okay, even though it is not going to get you anywhere. Throughout the whole story, Hem never changed. He always believed that the cheese would be returned to Cheese Station C. He represents the people that will deny change every chance they get and will try to keep the old ways as much as possible. After some time, however, Haw did change. He learned that the cheese was not ever going to be in Cheese Station C again.…

One of the questions that I have pertaining to creating an annotated bibliography in APA format is whether or not the explanations and paragraphs of each reference should be indented the same as the reference. As I was reading the annotated bibliographies samples in the Purdue Online writing lab, I have noticed that the paragraphs under the references are flush with the indentation of the reference and the first sentence of each paragraph is not indented (OWL, 2009). However, as I was reading this week’s lesson and other classmates’ forums and comments here at AMU, I have noticed that the paragraphs are not indented as they are in the Purdue Online writing. This has me confused and I would like to know which is the correct form, AMU or the…

“Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson MD., is a book I have grown to appreciate very much. The author did a fine job explaining the complications experienced in the process of change. He was able to connect his insight about change with his readers by using likeable characters and out of the ordinary euphemisms. His characters consisted of two mice and two tiny people. The two mice were named Sniff and Scurry. Their characters were able to adapt to the change happening within the plot. When they realized the “loss of their cheese”, they were able to gather their “running shoes”, work through the cause of the loss, and begin searching for new cheese in order to continue their happy and successful living. The tiny people were named Hem and Haw. Hem and Haw did not react so positively to the “loss of their cheese”. They became very emotional about the loss and wasted a lot of time focusing on why it was so unfair instead of beginning the search for new cheese and the success that awaited them. Sooner or…
