AN INTERESTING PERSON I ONCE MET
AN INTERESTING PERSON I ONCE MET
During the last school holidays. I often went out for walks in the evenings, and the beach was one of my favourite choices. It was there that I met an interesting person.
He was sitting under a coconut tree where a fishing boat was moored. His gaze was fixed on something far away, something as far, perhaps, as the horizon. He was hardly aware of my approach. But, as I halted my steps, about two metres away from him, he turned and greeted me with a toothless smile. He looked sun-tanned and wrinkled. I guessed he must be in his early 70s'. But he was cheerful and friendly as I talked to him.
During the course of our conversation, he unfolded certain parts of his personal history to me. He had been a fisherman all his life. In fact, he started learning the trade ever since he was a young boy of thirteen when he helped his father to earn a living. It had been a very tough life at sea, getting up as early as two or three in the morning to go out fishing.
Then, with a twinkle in his eyes, he began to relate to me some of his adventures at sea. Once, during a storm, his boat was wrecked and smashed up but he was finally rescued by a passing boat after clinging to a piece of plank for one day and one night. Next, came his encounter with a hungry shark in the rough sea. He had been tossed into the water from his boat but he managed to escape from its jaws when a friend in another fishing boat helped him out of the water in time.
Here was a humble man who had come through life with a smile in spite of its many dangers and hardships.

He fished for a living, to keep his wife happy, but he was never truly a fisherman. He did not enjoy fishing like the rest of his wife’s family did. His skin was not tough enough as “the salt water irritated his skin as it had for sixty years…and his arms, especially the left, broke out into the oozing saltwater boils”. (paragraph 60) The sun and wind took a toll on his body that the others did not experience. To him, the boat held emotions such as pain, despair and struggle. He would rather be inside, reading and learning, but was instead forced to…

We cannot be more than three car lengths away. My eyes are drawn to him, they are fixed and I cannot pull away. It must be 80 degrees on this hot and hazy Saturday afternoon yet with ease and comfort he wears a green hooded army jacket that also appears to be lined. It is not dirty, but it is not necessarily clean either. It is old! That’s what it is, old. His dulled out brownish salt and pepper hair appears finger-combed away from his face. Surely his full beard provides some protection from the intensity of the sun. His skin is aged, tan and weathered yet his face remains expressionless as if injected with Botox. His back is protected with the shade cast by the shadow of the tree he is sitting under. The leaves of the tree prove to be as unreliable as the conditions of life as they allow rays of sunlight to enter here and there. The light breeze offers some relief as it offers a refreshing cool air and then drastically changes as if blowing segments of sun rays in our direction. As each car approaches, he gazes upward ever so…

He also loved it because it part of his family’s roots, his uncles from his mother’s side are all fishermen. He toughed it out with his father because he felt that is was very brave of his father to choose a life doing something he didn’t want to do than forever following his own dreams. In life people learn from their mistakes and sometimes, like Frank McCourt, from hard times that, while painful, can be of the greatest benefit from among their experiences. It shapes them into the people they are and brands them, leading them to be high achievers in life. Moreover, their achievements are more remarkable than those whose childhood were happy; they were marked by adversity and their drive to overcome and exceed expectations. A good life was not handed to them, but rather earned.…

The second time I saw him, he was much taller. He bragged about the new clothes that his grandfather bought for him during his summer vacation in Taiwan. He told me that even his underwear and socks were all products from Taiwan. He told me that he wanted to be a doctor one day so that his grandfather wouldn't have to leave the house so many times for hospital visits. We shared stories of our own personal lives over the years, all of the happy moments, all of the sad, the good, and the bad.…

    A Strange Person I Know

I have a strange neighbour whom I meet only in the evenings when she comes home from work. I find her odd because of what she wears every day to work - a frilly and feathery purple hat! It did not matter what clothes she wore on that day or if the colour of her clothes matched her hat because she would still wear it, rain or shine. When I first saw her, I could not help laughing rudely because the purple hat lookedridiculous on her head. My friends and I would tease her behind her back and crack the most offensive jokes about her. Luckily, she never came to know about those awful jokes or my friends and I would have had a lot of explaining to do then. However, as the months passed, I came to know her through our evening meetings. She was a surprisingly kind and sincere person. I felt sorry for talking behind her back. After several meetings with her, I found the courage to ask her why she always wore her hat. She told me that her grandmother had worn that very same hat thirty years ago. She wore it because it reminded her of her grandmother.I was more than surprised by her answer because I realised what a treasure that hat must be to her. So she was not so strange a person after all since I too have some treasured things which I refuse to let go of, even when they look ridiculous and silly.…
