An unusual person
My sixteen year old brother, Ranny, definitely stands out in a crowd of teenagers because of his unique appearance loving and caring ways. The very first thing that you notice when you look at him is his size. He stands at shoulder height next to me; indeed, he is taller than teenagers his age, and is definitely stronger and of course taller than me. His weight is a heavy as 210 lbs; without a hesitation. He recently signed up for the football team, where he was told: ‘’ you have to be careful, because you might unintentionally hurt the other footballers smaller than your size.’’ What is also amazing is his spiky dark hair; it is thick, course to touch, and styled in an outdated boy cut. Most persons can’t pass near Ranny without rubbing his big head and saying ‘’ what kind of hair is that boy?’’. Ranny’s plump face is fair, with some spots lightly dotting his remarkably male features. His eyes are grey, and his eyebrows black and thick. His lips are full, and his extra white teeth, which appear when he smiles have a wide gap in the middle. His shoulders are very broad, his chest juts out, and his belly is plump. His forearms are bulky and look powerful, yet his wrists retain the same creases he has since he was an eleven pound new born. When we hold hands, his hands feel nearly as large as mine, and between his fingers are very soft. His legs are powerful and strong, and his knees are covered with scares from riding bikes and climbing big trees. His ankles are so rock-solid; consequently he can’t certain shoes. His feet are size 12 and wide, sometimes I think that he won’t get a shoe to fit him. Despite his appearance, Ranny is surprisingly sensitive, loving and caring. He is indeed a gentleman, tends to his little nephew, and helps my mother around the house. From his head to toe he is a bit confusing; although he is only

He grew facial hair and his voice began to deepen because of the lengthening of his larynx (Buchanan, Eccles, & Becker, 1992). This is a normative physical change that all well-nourished adolescents experience.…

Kindness is such a simple thing that so many teens and adults alike have a hard time doing. The desire to be socially accepted sometimes outweighs the pros of being kind to others. In Palacio’s book Wonder, readers are introduced to a character named August Pullman. August is challenged with a facial deformity that causes him to look different than others. He has received many surgeries to fix some of the issues, but because of his surgeries, August has never went to school. At the age of ten his parents decided it was time for August to go to school. They enrolled August into a private academy so that the burden of school would not be a difficult task to handle. August knew going in that students would not be okay with the way he looked, but he took the plunge anyways. August was a smart kid and knew some day he was going to have to face the world. Who would have thought it would have been during prime time middle school. August was “like a lamb to the slaughter” who was struggling to survive middle school. He needed a friend like Christopher who would look past his physical appearance. He was in need of a small act of kindness. Throughout the book, August received many small act of kindness. However, those acts of kindness did not come without a price. See for teens, when they are scared of something or someone they try and make the life of others around them more difficult. In…

The character that I identify with most would be Paul Rusesabagina. Paul Rusesabagina was the manager of a Rwandan hotel called the Milles Collines. He tells his story about the genocide in Rwanda during 1994. I picked Mr. Rusesabagina because it is his autobiography and he is telling the story. Also, it’s easy for me to see how the simply rules of being hospitable can save the day.…

Once upon a time in my health class we watched a sad movie called Odd Girl Out. It’s about girls getting bullied in school, and at home. It’s a somber and tragic movie that makes you take a step back and think about bullying. It makes you understand what bullying can do to someone and the pain they can get from it. It clearly distinguishes the roles of the bully scene.…

High school is a period of wonder, excitement, and mystery, where a teen’s first taste of freedom guides them on their journey. On the contrary, it is a time of social pressure and anxiety, where fitting in with “the crowd” is what looms on every young boy’s mind. This was me as a sophomore, trying to fit into the archetype of the athlete; the student who could clock a 6 minute mile or just hit a jump shot. I would mirror their actions, trying to force myself to copy certain qualities, like music and things that they enjoyed. But alas, my 5’8 height, 130lb body weight, and scrawny body frame questioned my ability to perform like a top athlete. Even so, I conformed myself to the social norm of what I thought was cool, allowing peer pressure to get the best of me.…

As I was growing up, I noticed that my brother spent most of his time with the same friend. His friend was dark skinned and I always noticed that. But I began to notice it less and less as he was at our house a lot. He was always funny and nice to me. We even had our own handshake for whenever he would come over. He would talk to me about lacrosse and about my friends and all three of us would play lacrosse outside together. He was always fun to be around and even though he was black, it didn’t matter to me the color of his skin. What mattered to me was that he was a good guy who was nice to his friends little sister which was not easy to come by. He came along with us on several vacations and we treated him like…
