The fun they had
Isaac Asimov is a well-known science fiction writer for such stories as Lucky Stars, The Pirates of Asteroids, The Kingdom of the Sun and other books that came from under his pen. Most of his popular science books explain scientific concepts, explore the universe, present our future, but all of this he permanently connected with science. In 1951 he wrote a science fiction story called "The Fun They Had" for a syndicated newspaper page. Later it was published in "Fantasy and Science Fiction" magazine. Asimov tells us about differences between schools of the past and schools of the future.
The story begins in 2157 with the description of the “real” book Margie and Tom had found. The word “real” means that words in it were printed on paper and stood still. As we can see, the future is connected with the computers and technology, people had mechanical teachers, read books on television screens. That’s why Margie and Tommy were surprised by their finding. The book was about school where Margie grandfather’s grandfather used to go.
Then the author goes on to say that Margie hated the school because her mechanical teacher had been giving her tests and she had been doing it worse and worse. Her mother sent for the County Inspector who took the teacher apart and then put it together saying that the problem was with the teacher, not with the girl.
As it turned out in the school of the past the teacher was a man. He told children things, gave them homework, asked questions. He did not live in a house. There were special buildings where kids went to.
The author concludes with Margie’s thoughts about the old schools. She thought about the fun children had sitting together in schoolroom, going home together and helping one another on the homework, she thinks schools in those days was much better than today.
The story is written in the genre of science fiction which usually describes the events in the future. The author
