They also behaved in certain ways because of their race. Back then, you wouldn’t dare catch a Black man dating a White woman. Today, interracial dating doesn’t bother most people. In the old days, men were the breadwinners for their families, while the women sat back and stayed home with the children. Now, more women are out in the workforce and sometimes, the roles are switched, having the husband being the homebody. This paper examines the differences between the different ways young women view themselves and their race through music versus the way males are stereotypically viewed by others because of their race.…

Before a time of instant downloads and ¬¬internet ads to promote new music, record labels and song promoters had to find a way to expose their music to the public in order to make a profit. Tin Pan Alley was a street in Manhattan, New York, that was home to songwriters and publishers whose pianos playing through open windows sounded like tin pans ringing out. In the Tin Alley sheet music industry, song pluggers were hired by publishers to spread their sheet music to potential performers. In those days, multiple people held the jobs listed above. However, today, it is not uncommon today for an individual person to be in charge of them all.…

Three of the main music genres of today’s world is Hip Hop, Latin Pop, and R&B and I believe these artists have nothing in common but their passion for music have been able to make history throughout their lyrics. Caramanica is right to turn to these two young actresses/idols/musicians as a barometer of the pop cultural world, because they are certainly exemplary of the state of pop culture (and, of course, tabloid culture, as well). Both fulfill reasonable, identifiable, relatable roles for young women. Miley, the rambunctious rebel who is using her music to jettison her identity forward; Selena, a biracial young woman who is poised, graceful, and a friend any young girl would want to have; and even, to extend the comparisons of other young stars — Demi Lovato as the impassioned, slightly tortured diva, and Vanessa Hudgens as the laid-back West Coast bohemian who has eschewed music for film.…

Since the beginning of time women have been uniquely viewed as a source of human life. Historically, however, they have been considered not only intellectually inferior to men but also a major source of temptation and evil. As one reflects back upon history he or she can easily conclude that women have made significant progress. Traditionally women roles were understood to be wifehood and motherhood. However, time has greatly changed and women have acquired several rights. This has been easily personified in pop music. One of today’s top pop music artist Rihanna has made these accomplishments noticeable to society. Rihanna has made it evident to millions of people around the world that it is ok for women to be promiscuous, sexy, and bold. There is plenty of reason to be concerned about Rihanna’s musical career. The question, however, is not whether or not Rihanna makes good music or whether she tops the billboard charts. The real concern about having a young female music artist (Rihanna) in main screen media is whether she portrays a positive influence on society.…

    The Origins of Pop Music

    • 1015 Words
    • 5 Pages

What we know of today as "pop" or popular music evolved in American society over many, many decades. Pop music, which accounts for the majority of the music on today's charts, is an eclectic mix of many different styles of music--from jazz to country; rock and roll to rap; be-bop to hip-hop. Pop artists such as Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Outkast, Madonna, Maxwell, and others routinely blur the lines of these musical genres with their award-winning tunes. These artists push the boundaries of what is considered "avant garde," "cool", and "hip" and constantly re-invent the medium. For this reason, pop music has helped make the music industry a multi-billion dollar a year business, one whose influence is reflected highly in all forms of today's media including film, video games, TV, and the internet. Pop music is also a cultural force that resonates throughout the world, touching people and societies in ways those governments or politics cannot.…
