Analysis: Lyddie By Katherine Patterson
In the novel Lyddie by Katherine Patterson, Lyddie is a young girl during the Industrial revolution who works as a factory girl in Lowell Massachusetts working conditions aren’t great in factories, so a petition to better these conditions is being passed around. Should Lyddie sign the petition? Lyddie should sign the petition because nothing will improve if these factory girls do not stand up for themselves. One reason Lyddie should sign the petition is to have more time to eat breakfast. For example, in chapter 10 states “Nearly half the meal time was spent simply going up and down the staircase across mill yard and bridge”. This evidence shows that Lyddie should consider signing the petition because there isn’t enough time to eat breakfast and if there isn’t enough time eat breakfast they won’t have the energy to work for 13 hours. This is one of the reasons that lyddie should sign the petition. Another reason that Lyddie should sign the petition is for better working conditions. For example in chapter 10 states that “Now that she have thought of it, she could hardly breathe, the air was so laden with moisture and debris”. This evidence shows that Lyddie should consider signing the petition if …show more content…
For example, in the novel it states “she was a work-fast, numble fingered, diligent in the nearly unbearable heat of the weaving room”. This shows that Lyddie should not sign the petition because she is already good at the job so what’s the point of making it easier if she is good at it and getting blacklisted. This isn’t a good enough reason not to sign the petition because if she does not sign the petition she will get sick and use all the money she earned on a doctor. This can say that Lyddie has not much of a choice because there is a sickness with the

Practice makes perfect, a common idiom to try to perfect in some particular activity. In this essay, Anne Lamott describes the case of writing horrendous first drafts on an essay or a research paper. She designates how she went through her writing process. Anne tries to explain that ‘shitty first drafts’ needs a great idea to begin with and on to writing the next draft(s). Creating the order of the drafts by making a subpar first drafts can lead to a good second drafts and an excellent third draft, or the final copy. She assumes that writing is not rapturous. The only way to create masterpiece(s) is to start in something small, which in this case, to create…

In order not to get blacklisted Lyddie should not sign the petition & work hard because the more girls that leave the ore machines Lyddie gets do to “the pay reflecting her proficiency”(pg86). So the more girls that leave the factory the more machines Lyddie would get & the more money she will receive. In the story it says “you’d be blacklisted. No other corp. would hire you”(pg92). Signing the petition will get Lyddie blacklisted. So it’s better if she didn’t sign it, keeping her in her job. Also in the story it states “should you sign the petition, Betsy they’ll dismiss you. I know they will”(pg91). This is the final reason why Lyddie shouldn’t sign the petition. Lyddie cares a lot about the girls she works with & she wouldn't want one of them leaving the job & getting blacklisted. Getting blacklisted is not a good thing if Lyddie gets blacklisted she’ll have no job & then who would take care of her…

The "Free Lindy Campaign" would come to appear to be the most well organised public rallying effort ever to be seen in Australia. In fact, it was mostly due to the spontaneous efforts of individuals who had risen to the cause, drawing with them thousands of new supporters. At its base were men and women who gave tirelessly to the cause of justice and the Chamberlains. People such as Veronica Flanigan who went from door to door in her village, 120 kilometres southwest of Sydney, gathering names for a petition. Mrs. J Edwards spent hours in Perth central mall handing out leaflets urging people to write to parliamentarians about the case. In Melbourne supporters stood on street corners, collecting signatures, twelve hours a day. A group of Brisbane women organised the mailing of masses of letters to politicians and newspapers. A schoolteacher traveled from Victoria to Darwin to set up vigil with placards outside Parliament to protest 'bush justice'. The efforts of all of these people resulted in the gathering of the largest number of signatures on a petition for a private person in Australia's history, numbering in excess of 130,000.…

The working conditions were extremely bad, and the women were also paid a lot less than men, the author stated that it was more or less white slavery. Yes, I could see myself working in those conditions, I would hate it but if it has to be done I would do it. Despite the fact that it is 2016, women are still getting paid less than men, it is more modern labor than what it was 100 years ago . In chapter 12, Lyddie gets a letter from her mother considering baby Anges dying. Lyddie’s mother wants her to send more money to help Judah and Clarissa. Lyddie thinks to herself this, “She must work harder. She must earn all the money to pay what they owed, so she could gather her family together back on the farm while she still had family left to gather. The idea of living alone and orphaned, and without brother or sister-a life barren of land and family like Diana’s.”(88) In this quote Lyddie is eager to pay off her family farm debts before she has no more family to be with. Lyddie also fears that her family will end up like Diana’s. If Lyddie lost her family, she would be alone and have no one left to love. Signing the petition would increase her chances of leaving with a non honorable discharge. This means she will lose her chance to provide for the family farm. Next Lyddie tries to determine what would happen if she was late to paying the financial needs for the family farm. In chapter 15, Lyddie is in the mill and lets her mind wander. “She could hardly keep her mind on her work. What was the use of it anyway if the farm was gone? But it couldn’t be! Not after all her sweating and saving.”(122) In this quote, Lyddie inquires what would happen if she was too late and failed to save her family farm. Her saved money would be put to waste and her work would’ve been for nothing. In conclusion Lyddie shouldn’t sign the petition because that risks losing her job which pays money and little money is still better than no money at…

According to the novel it states, “Blacklisted! The words sent chills down her backbone.” Blacklisted means being dismissed from a job for disobeying authority and never getting the same job in that field. Lyddie was nervous she could get blacklisted and that she will not be able to work at the Concord Corporation. She wanted to work there because it was where she made the most money and she needed the money to pay off the farm debt. However, that is incorrect. Uncle Judah came to Lyddie to inform her that he was going to sell the farm and that he has permission from her dad to do so. Therefore, Lyddie does not have a purpose to continue working in the mills. Furthermore, it means that if Lyddie signs the petition then she will have nothing to lose. Others also might believe that Lyddie should not sign the petition because she has plans to reunite with her family. As stated in the book it says, “She must work harder. She must earn all the money to pay what they owed, so she could gather her family back together back on the farm while she still had family left to gather.” (88) Lyddie’s main aspiration was to bring back her family on to the farm by paying off the debt. Therefore, Lyddie could not afford to lose her job by signing the petition. However, that is false. The family members have not been together as a whole family in a long period of…

The "Petition of Women of the Third Estate to the King" on January 1, 1789, was the first movement. Little was know about women’s feelings leading up to the meeting of the Estates–General. Women did not have the right to meet in groups, draft grievances, or vote, but some women put their thoughts to paper. They put together a document which told the King the following; they did not want to upset men’s rights, they just wanted education and enlightenment. If they were given education and enlightenment, it would make them better workers, wives, and mothers. Petitioners communicated their worries about prostitution and the fear that they would be confused with them. Working women did not stay at home but went out in public to make their living. The women wanted…

If Lyddie signs the petition maybe there won’t be as many injuries from the machines. Lyddie didn't think she would be one of the people getting an injury, but the machines aren't safe and they can hurt anyone who comes across the machines. “Before she could think she was on the floor, blood pouring through her hair near her right temple… the shuttle...” The machines are so dangerous that they almost costed Lyddie her life. People should be able to work without worrying about if their going to end up in the hospital or die. Another problem is the dust in the factories are unhealthy for people to be breathing in. “Betsy, I do wish you’d see Dr. Morris about that cough...” It may not sound bad but a cough can lead to many bad things. Betsy’s cough is from the dust from the factory going inside her lungs and making it hard for her to breath. It’s hard to watch someone go through a slow and painful illness.…
