Media and politics are closely tied together; they exist as a symbiotic relationship. Religion, democracy, and political power can cause shifts and biases in the general public’s opinion as shown in “A Ten Day Fast” by Harishankar Parsai. Religion causes people to have one certain viewpoint and religious media enhances that mindset, making them ignorant to the harm they might cause. Democracy leads to “sheep following the herd” mentality, which is why public opinion shouldn’t always be trusted. This goes along with how media today is widespread and can cause serious misinformation; Media only shows us what we want to see. Skepticism in political media is important and with great power comes controlled media and law reform.

This misinformation swayed people powerfully, and many went as far as to demonize Savitri and her husband for being the sinners when it’s truly the other way around. Religion is a platform that many news sources use (p67), and this proves to have mostly a negative perception on the audience it’s geared towards. Religious Americans that focus exclusively on news that appease to their beliefs are similar to the citizens in the story, they have only a viewpoint of their own and no other. A good example to mention is Westborough Baptist church and how they demonize homosexuals, thinking they are truly correct because it adheres to their religious scriptures without realizing the harm they are doing to their fellow humans. Bannu technically follows the rules when he starves himself for a “religious” cause, but he doesn’t even consider Savitri when she tried to commit suicide. Bannu threatening the government with his death actually shook up the prime minister, but Savitri is not given a second thought because in her culture she is considered a devi; meaning object.
