The three had absolutely no idea what they were talking about, but it led Kathy and Tommy to seek out Madame to find out if they could possibly get a deferral since they were in love.
Ruth asked Kathy when she was her carer if they could go see a boat in the marshes. Ruth asked if it would be possible to invite Tommy to join since he lived near where the boat was located. This was important because Ruth had extremely poor health and this trip to the boat was the last chance for all three of them to spend time together before they were too ill or “completed.”
During their time at Hailsham, Tommy was not the best artist and was teased due to his lack of artistic ability. Kathy walked in on Tommy drawing animals while she was his carer. Kathy wondered what Madame would have thought about the drawings after their time at Hailsham. Tommy developed a big Gallery theory where he hypothesized that the work Madame collected at Hailsham was to distinguish if couples were in love back in the future.
