Human social order is a facade. We as a species are able to perform at a higher level of intelligence than most species of the planet and our ability to reason is tantamount to our success. This along with our technology, from the flame to the invention of penicillin has made us the dominant species. Our restless drive for knowledge and the ability to attain it has driven us from the era of hiding in huts from nature, to the age of a new frontier. The book, Quarantine: The Loners by Lex Thomas is a fantastic novel, one of which I feel exhibits a no holds barred kind of approach to its story. An existing point profoundly laid out in the book. Therefore, it is no surprise that the authors’ Lex Thomas regaled the readers with scenes of absolute carnage, wrath and bloodshed. Not for any ideology, form of state or even a greater good. The characters contained within conducted these acts with the sole intent to survive and reach their graduation date to be free of the virus. Secondly, to further the point, there was a scene that showed the interactions between the gangs and the scraps, those who did not belong to any gang or tribe. When a member of one gang was attacked, they had the entirety of their group behind them. A scrap on the other hand, such as David and Will, has to hide, scavenge and steal to survive as the moment they retaliate against the others they would be ruthlessly put down. Though the expression of Humanity's golden rule was shown, it as well shows just how needless it is for basic survival that is unless you wish to work
