There are many different causes of obesity, which is becoming a serious problem in America. Americans are eating more processed foods and eating out much more. Many of the snacks in fast food restaurants, stores, and vending machines are higher in fat and calories than the foods at home. There are people who are unable to pay for high quality healthy food, therefore; they end up getting cheaper alternatives, many of which are unhealthy. The way our communities are set up also has a major impact on obesity. Many times, people are unable to exercise because their community doesn’t have safe ways to. Because of this, people end up staying home and do not get the exercise they need. Reading food labels and knowing what you’re putting in your body is very important, but many people do not know how to do it. People do not understand how many calories our body should take in in a day. Being educated on this can help the problem.

We should remind individuals that being physically healthy is a personal responsibility. If we can shift the anti-obesity messages from public health matters to personal responsibility, then maybe the number of obese cases would start to decrease. Balko states, “We’ll all make better choices about diet, exercise, and personal health when someone else isn’t paying for the consequences of those choices” (469).…
