Analysis Of Texas Tech University's Occupational Therapy Program
As a prospective graduate student I’m sure I harbor some preconceptions about graduate school. While I feel there are some similarities between graduate and undergraduate studies certain assumptions of graduate study based on undergraduate experience have to be dismissed. Of course there will be advisors and directors of programs in graduate study who help guide these programs, but the expectation of them guiding students like staffs do in undergraduate may be misleading. I believe that expectations for graduate students is to be self-motivators/starters. Varying from institution this may mean navigating through the particulars of the program and managing studies more than one did at the undergraduate level. The graduate student will …show more content…

Occupational therapy not only addresses the physical needs of the patients, but the importance of a person’s emotional and psychological well-being. It is a profession where spending quality time with patients and building a rapport is vital to their recovery and improving their quality of life. As my partner and I maneuvered around campus, we came across various barriers which would hinder the best performance of an individual in a wheelchair. For example, in Birch Hall we attempted to access the available study rooms, but the doors to the study rooms are made of thick glass, making the process of opening the door extremely difficult. Moreover, we traveled from the Birch building to the Hickory building, entering a steep path. We identified that a person in a wheelchair could potentially lose control as a result of the path’s downhill nature. In addition, when we reached the Hickory building, we found that the restrooms had no doors. Although, at first, this would appear to benefit an individual with a wheelchair, the walls curved…

Occupational therapy practitioners understand disabilities and various body functions and how the environmental contexts affect performance skills when presented with challenging demands in the schools environment (AOTA, 2014). It is critical for occupational therapy practitioners to advocate stakeholders in the community and in the schools in accordance with AOTA centennial vision “globally connected and diverse workforce meeting a society’s occupational needs” (AOTA, 2007, p. 613). Occupational therapy practitioners should take on a leadership role to generate a shared vision of being an effective communicator to administrators in support of helping and training teachers to be effective the classroom. Occupational therapists intervene in the lives of individuals who are physically and mentally incapable of performing daily routines. Occupational therapists treat individuals with a variety of disorders including cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is one of the more serious disorders occupational therapists have to come across in their careers. I believe this assignment will be practical to remember in my career as it just illustrates how important occupational therapy practitioners need to be client-centered. If I had to think of activity plans without talking to the client, I would have thought of activities to improve his range of motion. Even though this is a topic that needs improving, it was not what he wanted to work on first. He wanted to learn adaptions to be able to toilet independently, so he could do that kind of stuff while later improving his strength and range of motion. This helped me understand that even if you see a problem that you would think would need immediate attention, it may not be the what the client sees as an instant…

Occupational therapists are usually working with patients that are not necessarily looking reach ‘normal’ life. They work to educate their patients on how to take care of their daily hygiene tasks, and other work and hobby related skills with their impairment. Education in occupational therapy gives individuals the tools they need to feel they are living a purposeful life. Conversely physical therapists often have patients that are looking to make huge improvements by the time they are finished with treatment. The education physical therapists give individuals is also important, they teach people how to properly perform their exercise routines without inflicting damage to their bodies (Institute for Career Research 11). They also teach patients how to do therapy at home to further their results. Physical therapists similarly give patients tools to make daily tasks easier; however, their goal is to get the patients back their prior state of life so these tools are not meant to be long-term…
