arguments. For example in a situation involving you getting stopped by a cop for speeding the response Heinrich suggested was “ I’m sure you’re right officer. I should have been watching my speedometer more” (20) this demonstrates that the one who’s getting stopped is giving the officer the side and maybe he’ll let it slide. Another strategy he used was giving out specific instructions, for example he set goals for persuasion “ Stimulate your audience, change its opinion, and get it to act” (22). By giving instructions he turned persuading people easier and faster. The best chapter from the book would be number four “Soften Them Up” (38-46).
This chapter is the most important because the introduction of Aristotle’s top three tools in an argument, logos, ethos and pathos is introduced. He calls them “ The most powerful tools of persuasion: Argument by character, argument by logic, and argument by emotion” (38) also known as logos, ethos and pathos for short. By using emotion, logic and character it makes it easier to manipulate someone in an argument. For example, in Heinrich words “ Logos, ethos, and pathos appeal to the brain, gut, and heart of your audience” (40) which means that these tools are part of argument for persuasion to others. Heinrich explains how to use these tools by explaining in detail by definition and divides them individually in sections to go further in depth in the chapter. This chapter is useful by allowing the readers to fulfill themselves in further knowledge by using argument tools to spice up an argument and win it over.
Jay Heinrichs Book, Thank You for Arguing should be continued in the dual credit program. This book made me feel that in order to win over an argument I must take over my opponents side to get my way. He did well in going in depth with what he tried to demonstrate to show persuasion. His examples were well explained and were full on in detail, what helped the most was him portraying his life in the book in order to show his audience what real life arguments
are.
Overall this book is useful not only for kids but for anyone in age. It’s an easy book to read and with the examples provided it's very easy to understand. Many have already bought it all over the world. I recommend this book to the kids in my grade because not only do they get to knowledge themselves more, but they also get to learn how to win arguments in everyday life.
