Ray Bradbury strengthens the use of verbal, dramatic, and situational irony through Montag and Mildred to emphasize his points in the story about Mildred’s lack of acknowledgement for her real family, her forgetting about overdosing and Montag being a firemen who starts fires. Bradbury creates verbal irony to explain Mildred’s neglect for her real family, Montag. We see this happening when he asks her to turn off the parlor and she responds, “That’s my family” (Bradbury 46). This passage proves that Mildred is an example of verbal irony due to her calling the walls with TV’s her family and caring more for them than Montag. Moreover Bradbury generates dramatic irony to emphasize Mildred overdosing on her medicine and then forgetting about it…
WetWind Alternatives Corp (WWA) produces electricity through alternative methods such as wave and wind turbines and owns two subsidiaries, Kahuku Wind Inc. and North Shore Wave Electric Inc. (NS Wave), on the north shore of Oahu, HI to utilize the resources of this geographic location in their business venture. Deloitte’s Case 13-06 – “Natural Irony: Accounting Considerations When There Is a Natural Disaster”, discusses a hypothetical scenario where a volcanic eruption causes massive damage to the subsidiaries’ operational assets and poses the question of how to properly record these occurrences in financial statements. The main issue is that Kahuku Wind and NW Wave’s fiscal year end is October 31st so that WWA can have complete financial information for their December 31st consolidated financial statements. If the natural disaster were to happen in mid-December, WWA would need to analyze what steps need to be taken to produce accurate and non-misleading financials by adhering to accounting standards.…

“Humor appear’s to help people’s psychological and physical well being.” It says in Peter McGraw’s essay “The Importance of Humor Research.” It has been proven that it is good for your body to react in such a way to a funny situation but the psychological portion of it is hard to understand. When someone laughs, endorphins are released from the brain and are sent throughout the body creating the feeling of pleasure. It is a healthy alternative to any negative situation, whether it be negative or awkward it can be made easier with a joke here or…
In response to the “Lesson in Irony” presented by the author I would have to disagree with his or her opinion. I do not think the author correctly reflects poverty in America. The author is implying that the government program run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is promoting dependence on their program for people in poverty who are unable to provide meals for the families. To me it comes across that the author is using sarcasm to get their point across rather than looking at the realities of the people receiving these free meals and Food Stamps.…
Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest provides a satirical view of the Victorian era, primarily focusing on Victorian standards of marriage and social expectations. Wilde builds his critique of Victorian morality through his humor and wit between the character’s banter, the hypocritical Victorian view of honesty.…
Salem is a town that is centered on their religious beliefs. The church is the basis for their morals and ethics, but discovery of the actions of the town’s girls impacts the entire town. Reverend Parris discovers the girls along with Tituba conjuring up spells, singing Barbados songs, and dancing naked. This begins a series of events in The Crucible by Arthur Miller where he uses irony to show that guilt can cause the most upstanding men to act uncharacteristically.…
The irony within situations and statements dominates a story's plot, contributing to both the rising and the falling action, which William Golding accentuates in Lord of the Flies. When a group of young boys crash their plane on an island, they perceive the situation as an adventure, but they soon realize the danger in the unpropitious circumstances at hand. Through the situational and verbal irony that arises, Golding delineates how people can hypocritically adapt to having characteristics they do not condone in others and how innocence shields children from seeing flaws in adults.…

Sarah states that laughter is beneficial to health because it relieves stress and helps one socially. Information from another article Laughter is the Best Medicine concurs with what is being said. " Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. ....Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert" (Smith, Segal). She gives physical and mental effects of laughter such as decreased risk of heart attack, increase pain tolerance, increased intelligence, production of antibodies and protective cells that fight off disease and infections. Smith and Segal created charts, shown in fig 1, with lists that include benefits of laughter that Sarah mentions and more. In the article The Health Benefits of Laughter similar benefits are also mentioned: "research shows that when you laugh, there is an increase in oxygen-rich blood flow in your body, possibly due to the release of endorphins, which create a chemical rush that counters negative feelings and stress"(…
He demonstrated in the book how cruel the reaction of humor is because it is a reaction that is unrelated to the reality observed by the person who laughs. He didn't demonstrate it that clearly of course, but I'm telling you the vision he gave me. Freud talked a lot about the pleasure the human being obtains from immoral fantasies that make him laugh and he talked a lot about jokes with sex themes. I mentioned his work because this was the first time I studied the psychology of humor, even though I don't think Freud's book clarifies anything. The unique interesting point in what I read was the comprehension regarding the cold reaction when a person is dominated by the tendency to laugh. When we laugh about something, we are being cruel in our judgment and we are not considering anyone's pain. We laugh at other people's ridiculous situations and ridiculous mistakes. We are distant from the problems and the worries of our surroundings. So, humor means indifference to other people's pain, which is not healthy. The human being must be sensitive and have pity on those who suffer. However, the indifference caused by humor can have also a positive meaning if it is indifference to human mistakes and to our suffering when we have to bear it because there is no other solution. Irony can help a lot people that are depressed or have no sense of humor. How does it work? You simply…
The largest reason I choose to make others laugh is because of the amazing feeling of accomplishment I receive. I do not care for a championship ring or a shiny medal; my rewards are smiles and uncontrollable bouts of laughter from others. Happiness is my currency, and I am growing more and more greedy for it. In fact, my daily goal is to make someone smile. This is why I want to be defined by my ability to make others temporarily forget any negativity in their lives through the beautiful, stress-relieving process we call…
Dating a Sarcastic person is not as painful as would like you to believe. Well, we didn't say it's going to be easy. But it's not as much a disaster as Dr. Hannibal Hector from Silence of the Lambs has got us to think. Yes, sarcastic folks come across as arrogant, cocky, and inconsiderate; however they can be mighty smart, likeable and mushy on the inside as well. They may not say it like it is. But that only means they're not being outright rude, right? Which means they are considerate right? Confused? Well, go ahead and read why it is just awesome to date a sarcastic person.…
