In the book holes, written by Louis Sachar, Stanley Yelnats the main character is a poor, friendless, over weighted boy who is constantly bullied at school. He is arrest one day for a crime that did not commit. Stanley is therefore condemned to jail or to be sent to a place called Camp Green Lake for eighteen months as he is unable to prove his innocence. Stanley chooses Camp Green Lake. But upon arriving in the camp, Stanley discovers that it is actually a barren and desolate wasteland, where boys are forced to dig holes in order to "build character". There, Stanley meets a few boys who he will share a tent with, including a boy called Zero and a counselor called Mr. Pendanski who enjoys mocking Zero. At first Stanley does not think much of Zero, as Zero is a quiet boy who does not speak or answer the questions people ask him leading everyone to think of him as stupid and brainless. But after discovering that Zero does not know how to read or write, Stanley begins to teach him in replacement for Zero to dig a part of Stanley's hole each day as Zero is a fast digger. Through this, Stanley finds that Zero is not as stupid as everyone thinks he is. But when some boys explain to the warden about their little arrangement, she forbids it and tells them that Stanley will not build character anything if Zero digs his holes for him. Mr. Pendanski takes this opportunity to “explain that Zero is too stupid to learn anything” and hands Zero a shovel telling him that it is all he will ever be good for. Zero responds to this by using the shovel handed to him and whacking Mr. Pendanski on the head, Zero then says that he hates digging hole and runs away from the camp. Stanley feels that all this was caused just because he allowed Zero to dig his hole and tries to keep a look out for Zero, in hopes that he will come back as there is no water supply outside of camp. He sees the Warden order Mr. Pendanski to cancel all of Zero’s file including his criminal
