The knight admitted that he wanted to kill the god within him, but he chose to have a confession with Death, which is a religious way to confess. Is that a paradox?
When being asked to speak out his secret, Death said, "I have no secrets and nothing to tell". Was he telling the truth that he knew nothing or he was lying to Knight, if he was lying, why he chose to tell a lie?
Now I would like to begin with the first question, in 18:19 of the movie, in the beginning of the Knight's confession, he said, …show more content…
Is it so cruelly inconceivable to grasp God with the senses? Why should he hide himself and unseen miracles?"
(20:12)
Actually it is understandable that he is not clear and feel disappointed about God in his mind, so what made him behaved like this was the fear in his heart. What he wanted was not knowledge, it was a new faith, or maybe it couldn't be called as faith. He wanted an answer, so he was very desperate for the reply of Death or anyone. Nowhere to go is also a despair.
Knight: "I want knowledge, not faith, not suppositions, but knowledge. I want God to stretch out his hand toward me, reveal Himself and speak to me."
Knight: "Then life is an outrageous horror. No one can live in the face of death, knowing that all is nothingness."

But the Knight found that it is useless to create God, people are still suffering from the pain. What he is doing is fighting back with Death and trying to kill the God in his mind. So is it possible that God is Fear? What he wanted was to kill the fear in his heart. Just as he said, "I want God to stretch out his hand towards me, reveal Himself and speak to me." But it is impossible because God is exactly his fear. He is facing with his fear but at the same time he didn't see it clearly.
Similarly, the situation happened at the end of the movie, when Death entered the large room, people in the room see who was coming toward them through the twilight of the room, they rise from the table and stand close together.
Knight: "Good morning, noble lord."
Knight: "From our darkness, we call out to Thee, lord. Have mercy on us because we are small and frightened and ignorant."
Knight: "God, You who are somewhere, who must be somewhere, have mercy on us."
Knight, who claimed that what he wanted was only knowledge, not faith, when he realized that he was at the end of his life, he began to admit the existence of God, even though he wanted help from him, even though he knew it was Death actually. Even though he fought back hard, but he still lose the game with Death and
