What Foster means is that irony negates his writing and understanding. The irony creates excitement for the audience where they hope for one thing and the opposite happens. Not everything turns out the way you would think it would, you'd be surprised on how much irony is put into most shows and movies. The irony gives the audience an effect where keeps the reader and person interested wanting more.
