As I ran my finger down the list of novels and memoirs, my mind was troubled because I was very unsure of which topic I should pick. I read the prompt beforehand, so I knew that the book I choose had to hit me at heart and really implement a message. So I did some research on a couple of books and their authors and my search was abruptly halted when I came across the memoir, The Long Loneliness, by Dorothy Day. I could instantly tell that this woman had impeccable morals that I could learn from. So after checking the book out from the library, it was almost impossible to put down (I was also running short on time). As I got halfway through the book, I had a flashback from High school where we actually learned a little bit about Dorothy Day. This made things really easy to comprehend and provided further clarification for fuzzy parts of the book. Now, the main reason I choose this memoir was because of this quote, “We have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community.” (Dorothy Day, pg. 286) I was at the library looking at this book and I flipped to the back page to find this quote. This quote spiked my curiosity to discover her story and see what I can learn from this. I myself am a Roman Catholic and this book may give me some insight on how I can better myself as a Christianity believer. This book has explained the bigger picture to practicing faith and what it means to be a Christian. Dorothy Day’s autobiography goes into astonishing detail about her everyday life. She is not afraid to tell what happened even through all the terrifying events that take place. Now, to get started, her book is split up into three main parts, or we can consider them as different chapters in her life.
