Introduction
“Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind is written in his works.” As English writer Virgina Woolf quoted, the authors thoughts and beliefs have a large influence on the book so, as an introduction I will explain about James Dashner, the author of THE MAZE RUNNER. Firstly, I will explain about his background. Dashner was born in 1972 and lived with his 5 siblings. Dashner loved books as a child and has stated he had read a large range of books. Dashner wrote THE MAZE RUNNER in 2009 and now lives with his wife and four kids. In the next part, I will explain about Dashner’s plot and influences for this book, starting with the …show more content…
Before I get into the analysing, I would like to tell my interpretation of this story. As I stated above, I thought the guys in the maze represented the children being forced to work and Dashner showed how they felt by focusing on them. Within the book, there were many times where the kids expressed their feelings towards the unfair situation such as, this part of the product which is,“He fought the urge to run out there, slip past the moving stabs of rock before they shut, flee the Glade.”Moving on to the analysing, even though I thought this was a bad product overall, the way Dashner got the reader’s attention was great because of two different aspects. Firstly, the book starts off with Thomas waking up without his memory trapped in an enigmatic place called the Glade. Even though this is a bit confusing, the reader’s immediately consider three questions, who he was, where he was, why he was there and Dashner kept these three questions unanswered until the climax, making readers intrigued. Secondly the majority of the paragraph’s end with a cliffhanger which made me want to know what happened next. The superiority of cliffhangers has been proved by a myriad number of expert story tellers such as John Turby, a story consultant/script writer who has worked for major companies such as Disney …show more content…
Moving on, as I stated above, this book had one merit which is the intreging flow. As award winning wrighter Elsha Hawk has stated, the unpredictability is important and makes readers intrigued to the text. On the other hand the characterization, originality, description were all terrible showing Dashner’s weaknesses as a writer. These three aspects are all essential elements to the success of a text and the lack of it made THE MAZE RUNNER a complete mess. As THE MAZE RUNNER, is a young adult action text, it gets compared to other young adult action products such as “The Hunger Games” written by Suzanne Collins and the Harry Potter series written by J.K. Rowling. If you have read these texts before, I recommend you shouldn’t read THE MAZE RUNNER as it has a lot of negative points compared to them. If you haven’t read these texts I also recommend you shouldn’t read THE MAZE RUNNER as it’s a waste of time. My final opinion is that no matter who you are, reading THE MAZE RUNNER is a bad
