The word trilogy brings us all the way to the time of Athens and Greece. In around 500 B.C there were Dionysian festivals of ancient Greece and trilogies of plays were performed. The Oresteia is the only surviving trilogy of that was performed in Athens. Trilogies most often mirrors the three-act structure proposed by Aristotle. The Greek philosopher described stories as having a beginning, middle, and end, separating them into three pieces often followed that structure.
One reason why the trilogies are so popular is the Rule of Three. The Rule of Three is a writing principle that suggests that things that come in three are funnier, more satisfying and just more effective than things that come in pairs or come in fours. In New Hope Luke begins his Jedi training, they rescue Princess Leia from the empire, and Luke destroys the death star. In Empire Strikes, the rebels get defeated on Hoth, Luke trains under Yoda, and finally fights Darth Vader who turns out to be his father. And finally in Return of the Jedi, second death star is built, there’s a giant battle, Empire is defeated. In each star wars movie, starting with New Hope and ending with Return of the Jedi, it has that beginning middle and end. With all three movies in order they make that larger beginning, middle, and end that is needed for a trilogy to really come together. If a movie were to take three hours just talking the setting and the characters and then another movie would make up the middle and then a different movie would make up the end it wouldn’t be a trilogy. It’d be a so weird collection of movies that would be very boring To be a trilogy you have to have that three act structure. And together the star wars movies make a trilogy that is memorable and famous, that is talked about for years to
