In the Vietnam War, thousands of American soldiers were brutally tortured as prisoners of war. Imagine trying to forget every trace of the torture you've been through and to precede with your life as a normal person. This was the case with many POW's like Johnny"s dad. In the short story, Marine Corps Issue by David Mclean, Johnny's dad is like a turtle in a way because on the outside it's solid and rough, however, on the inside, the turtle is very fragile and vulnerable. His character presents people with a false intuition of being tough and hardcore but within him, he is really crying out for help to deal with the unfortunate moments that he endured.…

A natural disaster places an immense amount of strain on our civilian population as well as the political leaders who are responsible for their state’s overall well-being. Hurricane Katrina was a perfect example of how bad a natural disaster can affect a single state. Louisiana was in a state of emergency and the state elected officials held all the power to assist in the palm of their hands. At the time of this state’s crises, Governor Kathleen Blanco was charged with this responsibility. Each state’s governor has the authority to enact Posse Comitatus. Whenever they feel that their state is in an unruly state and Marshall Law is needed. The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 outlines the right of states, which can affect the wellbeing of citizens.…
World War II was a global military conflict lasting from 1939 to 1945, which involved most of the world's nations, including all of the great powers, organized into two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. In 1940, in accordance with the Selective Service Act set forth by Congress, over 1 million men were drafted (World). Most men who served were husbands, sons, fathers, brothers, or perhaps all four. Their risked their lives, were willing to fight and if necessary, die for their country. Children were left fatherless, and many lived in families of women. The biggest change on society at the time was the contributions women were making. During World War II, thousands of American women left their homes for the first time to…
In 1863, seeing the confederates oncoming to the North, The Congress decided to recruit more people to the army. Consequently, the Conscription Act led to the riots in New York City during 11-16 July 1963 that is known in history as the Draft Week. In fact, the uprising was a rebellion of the Irish immigrants against the black inhabitants of New York, which finally became one of the most destructive riots in the history of the city.…
In the early 1600's, before the birth of the administration, a system was created to supported the veterans. In 1917, Congress created a system for the veteran to have benefits that targeted disability compensation. The services included programs for disability compensation, insurance for service personnel and Veterans, and vocational rehabilitation for the disabled veteran. The Veterans Administration was created in 1930 when President Herbert Hoover signed the Executive Order. The administration consolidated all government activities dealing with war veterans. Over the years, the Department of Veterans Affairs has changed drastically and have encompassed many different facets. With the increase in foreign wars and conflicts, the influx of veterans in need of medical care and disability compensation…

Alan Brinkley of Columbia University discusses the effects of World War II on the domestic character of the United States. Brinkley states the war changed American—its society, its politics, and...its image of itself. The large movement of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North was one of the most visible demographic changes that resulting after the war. More African Americans were hired because of the growing industrial activity. Also woman as a whole entered the paid workforce for the first time during the war. Brinkley says the most common and important observation about the domestic impact of World War II is that it ended the Great Depression and launched an “era of unprecedented prosperity.” He states “out of the visions came some of the postwar crusaders of American liberals – the battle for racial…

I chose Social welfare as my major because as a young leader in the Army I gained great satisfaction in helping soldiers and their families better adapt to military life by introducing them to all the social programs the army had to offer. Programs such as the army community service which helps young soldiers take care of their family’s immediate needs by helping the soldier’s family with life essentials such as food and clothing. Also I have taken great pride in assisting soldiers in acquiring emergency funds to help them in times of emergency, such as when an immediate family dies and the soldier has no money to travel the Army Emergency Relief program is there to help by giving the soldier a no interest loan to help with the travel expenditures.…

The military compensation system, like many others, is a multilayer package comprised of direct compensation, indirect compensation, and additional considerations not afforded to most civilian sector employees (Bricka, 2016). As the civilian sector continues to graduate its compensation system to accommodate the labor economics of today’s society, the military fails to trend in the same direction. The current military compensation system is adequate to most but is outdated and in need of reform. “It is rooted in industrial-era labor management practices, not linked to defined organizational outcomes, and rests upon an ineffectual evaluation system. It does little to incentivize performance” (Wallace, Colarusso, Hall, Lyle, & Walker, 2015).…
