Analysis Of The Student Fear Factor By Rebecca Cox
In chapter two, the Student Fear Factor, from Rebecca Cox book the College Fear Factor, she explores how students’ fears effect their success and how students use fear management strategies to overcome these fears. Cox examines the anxiety students have about transitioning from high school to college. She notices that the autonomy when transitioning into adulthood provokes anxiety in some students having to do with new responsibilities all on their own. In relation to college, she notes “the stress of assuming the responsibilities of college” where students are unaware of the college expectation. Rebecca correlates this stress to a lack of “college knowledge”, meaning that students are uncertain about course requirements, classwork and classes.

In the essay Are Too Many People Going to College? Charles Murray states that while more people should be gaining a liberal education in their high school years, not as many are so prepared for a college degree. Students are not being given adequate information about the history of the world around them during their formative years, and are instead made to wait until they move on to college. Students who score a higher percentiles are more likely to enjoy the constant research and studying, but for most average students, coursework is a major source of stress over a class that may not pertain to the career the want to pursue.…

Due to my uncanny similarity with the group of college students William Zinsser described in his essay “College Pressures,” his words induced within me feelings of guilt and regret. Throughout my years of schooling, there have been many occasions in which I have labored to a maximum which resulted in an almost unbearable amount of stress and panic. Oftentimes, I credited this anxiety to my teachers who assigned many projects and tests; or to the School Board that made continuous changes to the learning curriculum and expectations for “success.” At the beginning of his essay while he elaborated on his thesis, William Zinsser, master of Branford College, countered this thinking, “It is easy to look around for villains -- to blame colleges… the…

“College Pressures” by William Zinsser is about how college students are so worried about getting perfect grades, and under so much pressure to succeed. The article starts off with notes from anxiety filled students asking for advice from the dean of Branford College at Yale University. It only gives a few examples of the hundreds of messages that are sent to the dean asking for advice and help. This panic among students does not only occur at Branford College but at many colleges and universities across the country. Zinsser is also sought out for advice by the students of Branford; he is an English instructor at Yale University and the master of Branford College. He is close with many of the residents of the Gothic quadrangle, the resident hall where he also lives by. Zinsser states, “Mainly I try to remind them that the road ahead is a long one and that it will have more unexpected turns then they think. There will be plenty of time to change jobs, change careers, change whole attitudes and approaches” (208). This is stating that they need to relax, dare to take some risks, and experiment with life.…

Scelfo provides, “Anxiety and depression, in that order, are now the most common mental health diagnoses among college students, according to the Center for Collegiate Mental Health at Penn State”. By including precise data, Scelfo presents concrete evidence to her audience that is incontrovertible, thus enabling the reader to recognize the prevalence of mental health issues on college campuses. This information expands on the seriousness of such situations and stresses how more emphasis should be invested into making sure college students are emotionally healthy. Furthermore, Scelfo asserts, “In 2003, Duke jolted academe with a report describing how its female students felt pressure to be ‘effortlessly perfect’ :smart, accomplished, fit, beautiful and popular, all without visible effort”. By including this statistic, Scelfo further develops her thesis pertaining to the expectations of college students, specifically, how their mental states can be adversely affected by such pressures. By displaying legitimate feedback directly from college students, she effectively addresses the preconceived notions surrounding college life. In order to further convince her audience of the validity of mental health concerns, Scelfo incorporates reputable individuals in her essay, including, “William Alexander, director of Penn’s counseling and psychological services... Meeta Kumar, who has been counseling at Penn for 16 years…”. Although Scelfo might not be an expert on all subjects of mental health, she reinforces her assertion by including shared viewpoints from professionals, therefore making her own ideas more credible. Scelfo’s addition of logos and ethos emphasizes the factual evidence of of mental health issues among younger generations, prompting her audience to recognize the magnitude of such…

Throughout the course of our class we have read about many scholars and their thoughts on the schooling system. Our first author we read about was Rebecca Cox, a professor who thinks not only schooling should be improved but our entire political system as well, and her book The College Fear Factor explains exactly that. The second author discussed was Hsun Tzu who thinks that the goal of education should be to make a person who is truly consistent, but says that this takes time and comes with the experience of truly learning rather than relying just on memory. Freire was next and his thoughts on the schooling system are similar to Cox’s. He thinks students are seen more as objects rather than the subject and this is holding back our next generations…

College is hard enough for those who are ambitious, however; those who do not want to be there it is almost impossible. One writer states, “I’ve known students who were brilliant but were either incapable of performing the tasks necessary to succeed in required courses or were perhaps unwilling to do so.” (Sobel). The transition from high school to college is a new chapter, because it allows students freedom they have never experienced before. Most new college students cannot understand the realities of living a college life and will not be able to react to the new environment.…

For certain colleges do not offer what students need specifically for their academic path at the time they are available; do not have them at all. This causes students to “[Take] longer, since they register for fewer courses then they need to stay on track,” which illustrates the difficulty with managing the students’ courses and daily lives (Marcus 144). In which, affects mostly the students who are working part-time jobs, and work schedules are not flexible; making them unavailable for classes. It is important to remember that with help anxiety disorders are treatable and that students can learn alternative ways of coping with anxiety.
