There are also different ways to earn their way through college, whether it by athletic scholarships, academic scholarships, parents’ money, or even their own money. For those who have to pay their way in college, it is nerve racking to be responsible for paying the yearly costs of their education. Jon Marcus uses his article “The Reason College Costs More than You Think” to open the eyes of his audience about the reality of the extensive journey of college, and how time can influence the students’ thoughts in getting their degrees. In reviewing the article “At 2-Year Colleges, Students Eager but Unprepared,” we see how Diana Jean Schemo sheds light on why students are not truly prepared for a higher education. In her article, she follows a student named Michael Walton on his journey to obtain his associate’s degree. Walton was smart enough to graduate from high school one and a half years early. However, he found that when he took his entrance exams for college, his scores showed that he would need remedial math classes. Unfortunately, research suggests that nearly one-half of all the students entering into higher education will need corrective courses.…

This is because of the students’ failure of character traits. New research states that the skills that see a student through college and beyond have less to do with smarts but personality traits, such as the ability to stay focused and control instincts. Also in the article, it states, “Apparently medical reasons explain why children who grow up in abusive or dysfunctional environments generally find it harder to concentrate, sit still and rebound from disappointments. The part of the brain most affected by early stress is the prefrontal cortex, which is critical for regulating thoughts and mediating behavior. When this region is damaged-a common condition for children living amid the pressures of poverty-it is tougher to suppress unproductive instincts.”…

Introduction Many students are afraid to attend college because of the ever rising cost of tuition. As Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus put it in their article “Are Colleges Worth the Price of Admission?”, “Tuition charges at both public and private colleges have more than doubled-in real dollars-compared with generations ago.”…

“It’s just extremely disappointing and aggravating to have paid all that money and have nothing to show for it other than debt.” proclaimed Michelle Polyakov, an English graduate from Drake University. Polyakov obviously feels that college is not worth the cost and that all someone has to show for the education is debt. College has been deemed, by some, that it is not worth the cost because of the financial loss, the future job security, and the need for “blue collar” jobs. Finances, job security, and the need for manual laborers are all major factors in the debate of college and its cost. The reason being is because not all people are meant to go to college, or their situation just isn’t ideal. College is a privilege, and not every job requires you to have a higher form of learning, but most do. By viewing the debt of a student after graduation, the job security of graduates, and the need for manual laborers, one can infer that college is not worth the cost.…

In 2011, about 68.3% of students who graduated high school enrolled in college. About 40 % actually graduated within four years. Why is that? In most colleges, parties are a huge reason for the fact that the students stay out really late then have the issue of getting up in the morning. Others it’s just the cost to attend and there over all classes. College graduation rates are too low due to students not being able to afford tuition, not being properly prepared in high school, and not being able to balance social life and study time.…

Stress is defined as “a mentally or emotionally disruptive or upsetting condition occurring in response to adverse external influences and capable of affecting physical health, usually characterized by increased heart rate, rise in blood pressure, muscular tension, irritability, and depression” (McCleod). Stress and anxiety are the top reported impediments to academic performance in college students, both in the undergraduate and graduate levels. Between 2010 and 2014, the level of students reporting stress as an issue rose from 25 to 31%, while anxiety rose from 17 to 22%. (Miller). While having some stress is a normal occurrence, having too much stress can have negative side effects. Some of these side effects include excessive anxiety, depression, digestive problems, heart disease, sleep problems, weight gain, and impairment with memory and concentration (Chronic stress puts your health at risk). One of the most stressful times in a young adult’s life is the transition into college. But for some students, life after that initial transition only becomes more stressful. Some of those students are the students who are members of their…
