According to Laurie Monsebraaten stated (2003) “Parents who home-school pay for educational materials. They often forgo careers and a second family income".
Most of the time there is a positive and negative experience for a child who took homeschooling. It can …show more content…
literally affect their lives when they entered their college. Because after years of experiences homeschooling, lot of things change, they have to embrace it, all of it. And they have to adjust all of the same time. At first they have to admit it. Adjustments are not easy.
“It is not unusual to hear homeschooling parents comment that one of the things they like best about homeschooling is the way it has strengthened their family. This is not surprising, given the control we homeschoolers have over our time, the spaces in which we live and work and play, our activities, our diet, and much more. Simply spending time together, getting to know each other, learning to live together and sharing positive and negative does a lot to strengthen a family". (Larry&Susan Kaseman, 2003) Children who experienced home schooling do not have normal socialization experiences and this will affect their ability to relate with others, Homeschooled children achieve levels academic achievement similar to or higher than their publicity schooled peers. These results cut racial and socio-economical lines.
As per Richard G Medlin a psychology professor at Stetson University stated that "here continues a line of inquiry he began in one of the landmark articles of the original 2000 Peabody
Journal homeschooling special issue. Since that article he has published several pieces in the journal Home School Researcher, all of which find very positive results for homeschoolers' social and academic development. In this piece his goal is to review research on homeschooler socialization that has appeared since his 2000 article".
Some parents teach their children at home because they can provide a better learning atmosphere than what can be provided in a public school system. Parents spend much more time and interact with their children one-on-one which, often, is nowhere close to the large teacher/ student ratio within public and private school.
As per Lines, Patricia M. (1987) "Reviews homeschooling history, characteristics, practices, legal issues, and data on achievement, with observations about the limitations of the data. This article provides early researched-based estimates of the homeschooling population, based on reports from suppliers of curricula and a survey indicating how many homeschoolers use these curricula.
An estimated 120,000 to 260,00 children were homeschooled in 1985-1986".
Socialization is one of the major arguments used against homeschooling. The feeling is that students become isolated and lack certain social skills when they are home-schooled.
However, many students that participate in homeschooling interact with different home-school students, or groups. Students attend church groups, group sports, fieldtrips, volunteer events, and a lot of activities. Yes, socialization is a major issue but there are plenty of sources of information that show that socialization is not a big of concern.
They conducted an online survey (Drenosvsky, Cynthia K, Cohen, Isiah; 2012) resulted in a sample of 185 students from a variety of colleges and universities, both public and private.
The results show that as compared to traditionally educated students, college students who were homeschooled do not exhibit any significant differences in self-esteem. According to their research, they experience significantly lower levels of depression than those with no homeschooling in their educational
background.
According to Wichers, M (2001), multicultural ideology was one positive proponent of choosing homeschooling over public school education. Cultural awareness strengthened the family bond to language, customs, and values characterized by their heritage. Students' cultural awareness within a system was realized because cultural identity was realized because cultural identity was incorporated into their school work.
