The researchers discussed in class and all agreed that Zika Virus is a very dangerous and continuing to plaque southwest Florida. In hopes to promote public safety and aware other about the virus and how it can be contracted, the researchers decided to focus our intervention towards first year students living on campus. The researchers started off the project by contacting Florida Gulf Coast University Student housing and Residence life. The plans for a Zika Virus intervention were shared with the administrator of Eagle Hall in South Lake Village which is an on campus, first year housing for students who attend the university. On September 20th the researchers sat down as a group to discuss a game plan of how an intervention would be arrange…
In the article, "When Mosquitoes Were Killers In America" written by Lauren Tarshis, the author states that mosquitoes are far worse than being a nuisance. There are many places in the article that back this statement. For example, the author writes something about how mosquitoes can easily spread a deadly disease called malaria. "In this way, bite by itchy bite, 212 million people are infected with malaria each year. Many live in crowded areas where mosquitoes easily spread the disease from person to person"(Tarshis 13). This is saying that in a small area, mosquitoes can easily infect people with a deadly disease. This is important because it shows an example of a piece of evidence to back up Lauren's statement. Plus, it shows how mosquitoes…
West Nile virus caused a huge outbreak in 2013 ;this is called a mass hysteria. Mass hysteria is when people think of imaginary or real threats from rumors and lies. West Nile virus causes fever, headaches, body aches and skin rash. The virus is spread by mosquitos which makes it more likely to get infected. People were constantly worried that they or their children will get the virus . This goes along with The Crucible because several people started talking about witchcraft and then it began to spread. The more people spoke of it ,the more they were terrified. The West Nile virus only started because one person overreacted. The Salem Witch Trials happened because one parent overreacted.John Proctor dies because of Abigail,Elizabeth and society. What was the main reasons for John proctor's…
WNV IgM in serum remains detectable for at least 1 to 2 months after infection and sometimes longer therefore serum IgM results must be interpreted in reference to the patient’s clinical presentation and travel history, as well as regional WNV activity (Maldin B, et al. 2003)…
The West Nile Virus is transmitted to humans and animals trough the bit of an infected mosquito. The mosquito's biological name is Flavivirus. Not that many people get sick from West Nile Virus but there are still people that end up in the hospital. To treat West Nile you usually have to go to the hospital. To confirm that a person has West Nile Virus a blood sample has to get tested. People can help prevent West Nile by doing simple things around the yard.…
The Zika virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. This brings a big threat into our lives, as we are in areas that consist of mosquitos frequently. Its most common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis: generally are mild and last from a few days to a week (‘’Zika virus’’8). With the Zika virus spreading like wildfire from mosquito to human, we have to be more onboard with promoting bug spray to protect against the bite of mosquitos.…
There are hundreds of thousands of diseases in the world identified by scientists today. The disease focused on today is called the West Nile encephalitis. The West Nile encephalitis is an infection caused by the disease known as the West Nile virus. The West Nile virus is transmitted by birds to humans with the help of mosquitoes. There is no vaccine or specific treatment to prevent the virus. Some of the symptoms of a mild infection include fever, headache, and body aches. More severe infections include symptoms such as high fever, coma, tremors, paralysis, and rarely death (Medicine.net). So, this paper is going to focus mainly on the organism responsible for the…
The Zika Virus is slowly spreading across the globe and it’s becoming more and more dangerous.…
As it has been explained repeatedly, but I want to reemphasize, Zika is not like Ebola. This is not a human-to-human transmission, with the one exception that we'll talk about. It's primarily transmitted through mosquitoes, a very particular type of mosquito. But what we do know is that if you contract Zika, even if you don't appear to have significant symptoms, it is possible for Zika to cause significant birth defects, including microcephaly, where the skull casing -- the head of the infant is significantly smaller. We think that there may be other neurological disorders that are…
The first, and obvious strategy is to avoid mosquitoes. We all love to be outside but especially in the summer months when it is warmer outside and from the hours of dusk to dawn, mosquitoes are most active during these times. You should always have bug repellent on whether it be the spray on kind, the bracelets, or wipes. Anything is better than nothing. You can also protect yourself by wearing long sleeve shirts and pants, however mosquitoes are known to bite through thin clothing, so be careful! Mosquitoes love still water so if you see any water in your home or community that you think could result to West Nile, drain it or report it to your local authorities. If you see any dead birds also report that to your local authorities. These methods do no insure that you will never be infected by the disease so if you do happen to be diagnosed with West Nile, here are some treatments/remedies. There is no specific treatment or vaccine that is given to a person carrying the disease. People who experience mild symptoms usually get better with no medical help. People who suffer from severe affects can be hospitalized and given fluids through an IV. Some patients may need a ventilator to help them breathe properly. Other than this doctors can only make their patients comfortable and make sure they do not get any other infectious diseases. Doctors are still working to try…
You must be sure to eliminate any standing water from your yard and always wear protection out of doors that includes long-sleeved shirts and long pants when mosquito populations are high.…
Discovered in the western hemisphere between 2013 and 2015, Zika Virus has been spreading via daytime-active Aedes mosquitoes and in some cases via sexual transmission. Microcephaly, caused by the Zika virus, is a serious…
“Could the next threat be in your backyard?” The Zika virus is a virus that can take down a whole town. The zika virus is spread rapidly by mosquitoes; history shows the symptoms and treatment are very limited.…

Many people have encountered a mosquito bite and the side effects that come with being bitten. However, many people do not know about the deadly virus that mosquito’s may carry. The West Nile virus can cause other illnesses known as West Nile fever and West Nile neuroinvasive disease. West Nile virus first came to the United States from Africa. It was initially found in a Ugandan woman in 1937. Sixty-two years later it was detected all over the states in exotic birds in zoo’s, from the death of many crows, and in other animals. All viruses need a host to live off of, this includes West Nile virus. West Nile Virus was originally, and still is, spread between mosquitos and birds. Since birds migrate all around the country, the West Nile virus was easily spread.…
