Although Naomi Schaefer Riley use many effective rhetorical devices to strengthen her argument, she gets a little off topic towards the end of her article. The end of her essay lack the effective use of ethos and other rhetorical devices to keep the reader on track. The author keep coming back to Thiel’s idea which confuses the reader of her position in this argument. For example, she says, “so does Thiel’s offer suggest that a university diploma might be most useful lining a birdcage?” (10). By keep going back to Thiel’s plan for the students the article seems unprofessional and messy. It looks disorganized and takes away the intelligent tone she has established until this far in the article. By this unnecessary repetition the reader might…
In Jasmine Lopez’s persuasive essay video, the speaker was very well-spoken and kept her speech at a steady pace. I also liked how she would enunciate every word she spoke to make sure the audience was engaged and understood. Furthermore, the speaker’s opening line was relatable and provided a nice hook to start her speech. The speaker backed up her statements with factual data, which showed the audience that she was credible and passionate about her topic. As the speaker was saying agricultural terms, she made sure to define those terms.…

Advertising companies constantly struggle with ways in which to differentiate themselves. “The more messages they create the more they have to create to reach us; it has led us to a vicious circle of clutter”. Companies strive to “break through the clutter”, which in turn just creates more of a mess. Companies use tactics such as guerilla marketing, an alternative plan to grab consumer’s attention. This method takes an “in your face” approach, something out of the ordinary. In “The Persuaders”, Frontline discusses such techniques and companies’ approach to influence consumers.…
I attended to the simulcast of Bryan Stevenson’s talk. His one-hour lecture went by so fast that I did not realized that one-hour past by so fast. I really liked his speech, and there was nothing I did not liked. By hearing his talk, I realize he talk a lot about what he mentioned on his book. I really liked the fact he started by mentioning statistics about our nation’s incarceration. That our nation has the biggest incarceration in the world, that women incarceration has increased by 70% which causes their children to be displace in a foster care. About 70% on the incarceration have a mental illness. Another important fact it was that 30% of black male loss the privilege to vote. That one in three black males and…
Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) delivers the student address at Harvard Law School’s 2004 graduation ceremony in the movie Legally Blond. In the film Elle is a misguided student who gets accepted into law school upon false pretenses, merely to get back with her ex-boyfriend. He broke up with her because she was not suitable to be a future Senators wife, he claimed she lacked intelligence and only had her looks to depend on. Everyone’s doubt pushed her to stay determined, confident, and come to the conclusion that she does not need a man to justify her life. She also realizes that passion fuels the ability to become successful. This speech is very effective because of the rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos used throughout.…
After reading the story, “I Can Speak” by George Saunders, many readers would happen to realize that this story is not like every other story that is just picked up and read. In order for someone to fully apprehend the story, reader must stay consistently focused on the text. The story is about a reply letter from the company for a compliant letter that was sent by a customer named Mrs. Faniglia to a company named KidLuv Inc. regarding a product manufactured by the company known as I Can Speak!™. In America, there used to be unfair laws and regulations regarding labor. Children are put to work in harsh conditions, conditions often deemed difficult even for adults, and are forced to work ridiculous hours. Florence Kelley gave a speech at the National American Woman Suffrage Association in Philadelphia on July 22, 1905. In her speech, Kelley uses repetition, pathos, imagery, logos, and carefully placed diction to express how child labor is morally wrong and inhumane.…
Deborah Tannen’s “Sex, Lies, and Conversation” is a brief look at how men and women communicate with one another and the cross-culture differences between their individual styles and needs for conversation. Women often say that men do not listen or do not want to talk. Tannen gives reasons why women tend to believe that men are not listening, and shows that just because men have a different approach to communicating does not mean they are not listening to what women are saying. She uses several different examples to back up her statements including early childhood differences in communication between girls and boys, the body language men use and how women tend to interpret it, and how women tend to receive information while communicating. Men and women have very different expectations when it comes to communicating with one another.…
According to Dr. Louann Brizandine, in a 24 hour period, the average man will speak anywhere from 7000-10,000 words, whereas a woman can speak anywhere from 20,000-24,000 words. Thousands upon thousands of words are thrown out of the human brains, but how many of those are truly understood? More importantly, how many of those are not? In Deborah Tannen 's essay, "Sex, Lies, and Conversation," pathos and logos are dropped in bombshells in order for the reader to feel accessible to such information. She poses the question, "Why is it so hard to talk to my spouse?" Through various statistics and examples, she makes the reader feel like it is his or her world she is talking about, or individualizing the audience members. The pathos in this essay mostly stirs the inner desire for a happy marriage; she simply makes the male or female reader feel like they too have misinterpreted the opposite sex. Suddenly, the reader might feel guilty, but then relieved when Tannen displays the solution. However, the statistics, quotes, and facts in the essay…
In the Congressional Hearing about Syria in 2013, “Senator John McCain found himself feeling restless ... So he played poker on his iPhone to escape the feeling.”(Turkle 39). In Sherry Turkle’s book, Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age, the author depicts an individual that succumbs to boredom and alleviates it through the use of technology. This occurrence happens in our everyday lives. We attempt to relieve our boredom mainly through the use of computers and phones. After endless cycles of boredom and relievement, we begin to associate it as a normal occurrence in life and question whether it serves a purpose in life, making it have a negative connotation. Despite believing that boredom is pointless, we need to recognize…
"Offering Truth" was painted by Kendra Runnells. This painting has a lot of life lessons and meaning. The colors in the painting give off a sad and dark feel, but one can see another person giving instead of receiving and it also shows that it is sometimes better to stand alone than to go along with the crowd.…

In the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, characterization, setting and plot all assist in the theme. The theme is you need to speak up in order to help yourself. Anderson uses characterization to elevate the theme. Melinda is immature, which make her problem even worse. For example, Melinda acknowledges, “I almost tell them right then and there [about the rape]” (Anderson 72). Melinda foolishly tries not to tell anyone about her rape. Eventually, she learns that telling someone about the rape is doing her good and not harm, which is what the theme implies. In the same fashion, the setting is used to enhance the theme of the story. Melinda views the art room as her safe place. When her art teacher finds her crying and asks what is wrong, Melinda…
