In this paper I would like to examine the relationship between United States of America and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the reasons for their long-lasting close relationship as well to draw some future prognosis from both a realist and liberal point of view. I must state here at the beginning that this relationship is very complex when it comes to the whole region of the Middle East. The countries are very interdependent and also religion and ethnicity plays a big role there, but I will analyze it more in more detail in my paper.
History of Jordan and USA relationship
These two countries have been enjoying close relationship since the Eisenhower administration in the 1949, even tho they don’t have any formal treaty. Between 1949 and 1967 Jordan administered the West Bank, which is now a part of Israel, another close ally of the States. During 1990s Jordan worsened its relation with the USA as it refused to join allied coalition against Iraq and therefore distanced itself from USA and the Gulf States, but retrieved their closeness again as it distanced from Saddam Hussein. Since then there seemed to be no major discrepancies among those two countries and they been enjoying their closeness and common goals as is mainly the peace in the Middle East. Members of American government as well as any current president pay regular visits to Jordan and members of Hashemite family gain their education in the UK and the USA as did current king Abdullah II.
High USAIDS assure good education in Jordan, water supply in desert areas, from which majority of Jordan consist of, and military support and training in USA bases in Jordan. Jordan has a population consisting of 92% of Sunni, as far as it is non-extremist Sunni governed country together with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Gulf States and Northern African countries. This fact is a major determinant of their close relationship with the USA, or better said why the USA is
