January 20 ,2017 Final Paper

Some people have a personality trait called “grit” . Angela Duckworth defines grit as the determination to do something until you have obtained the skills to do it correctly . In her research she explains that one must have endurance to complete a race . In True Grit by Angela Lee Duckworth and Lauren Eskreis -winkler , the example they give of true grit is , “ At the starting line it is the hare who is expected to finish first . Sure enough , the hare quickly out spaces the tortoise , accumulating so great a lead that he lies down to take a nap mid -race. When the hare awakens , The tortoise , who all the while has been laboring towards his destination , is too close to the finish line to beat” ( paragraph 2) . This shows grit because the tortoise himself , and everyone watching thought he had no chance of winning , but he had the determination to finish the race and he won . A mindset is something you can change which makes it a belief . People can have one out of two mindsets , a fixed mindset or a growth mindset . Having a fixed mindset means that you believe in

In the play he goes to Desdemona’s father , Brabantio , and tells him how Desdemona and Othello have married . He also put a bug in Othello’s ear that Desdemona is cheating . He also shows grit because he was successful with his goal of ruining their marriage by putting a lot of effort in planning his ideas . In the play , Othello , by William Shakespeare , Iago states , “ Call up her father . Rouse him . Make after him , poison his delight , proclaim him in the streets ; incense her kinsmen , and, though he in a fertile climate dwell , plague him with flies . Though that his joy be joy , yet throw such chances of vexation on’t as it may lose some color” ( 11 )

A fixed mindset is when people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They're wrong. People in a fixed mindset believe you either are or aren’t good at something, based on your inherent nature, because it’s just who you are. The fixed mindset is the most common and the most harmful. The fixed mindset believes trouble is devastating. You want to hide your flaws so you’re not judged or labeled a failure. You stick with what you know to keep up your confidence you look inside yourself to find your true passion and purpose, as if this is a hidden inherent thing. Failures define you. You believe if you’re romantically compatible with someone, you should share all of each other’s views, and everything should just come naturally. It’s all about the outcome. If you fail, you think all effort was wasted. In the book “Mindset” “a fixed ability that needs to be proven, and a changeable ability that can be developed through learning (Dweck 15).”…

Many characters in the Shakespearian play, Othello, are deceived by the clever and flattering Iago. Early on in the play, Iago is trying to get his plans against Othello into motion. He meticulously chooses vulnerable characters to help carry out his vengeful scheme. Roderigo is one of the many susceptible characters who fall for Iago’s tricks. Iago catches Roderigo in a very vulnerable state and carefully plants his own scheme into Roderigo’s mind. Iago wants Roderigo to keep fighting for Desdemona despite her marriage to Othello. He tells him “Seek thou rather be hazed in compassing thy joy then to be drowned without her” (1.3 353-355). Iago flatters Roderigo by making him believe he has a chance with Desdemona and to fight for her using…

A person with a fixed mindset exhibits behaviors that portray the individual as a one track mind. A fixed mindset causes one to only see life from one perspective. A fixed minded individual lacks maturity in learning how to adapt to the changes of life and the challenges it brings. Growth mindset allows one to be open for perspectives on a situation in order to develop a well thought out strategy to solve the challenges of life. It is important for an individual to use a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset. These two mindsets exhibit black and white as the fixed mindset and color as the growth mindset. As an individual develops they change their mindsets…

In this piece of his soliloquy, Iago is talking about how he plans to use Desdemona to take down both Othello and Cassio. Iago is going to convince Othello that Desdemona is cheating on him with Cassio. Iago knows his plan will work as Desdemona will feel sorry for Cassio and try to convince Othello to make him lieutenant again. This plan will definitely work to Iago’s advantage here as Othello will probably be too heartbroken to think straight, and will end up ruining his relationship with Desdemona. He will also make sure that Cassio’s reputation is destroyed in the city. Iago can finally at this point take over Othello’s job as general, which is one of the things that he wanted. Shakespeare chooses to have Iago say that he will turn Desdemona’s…

Did you know that according to research, grit is a common trait in people that have achieved the most? Well, everyone wants to be successful, but what even is grit? Grit, as explained by Angela Duckworth, is “passion and perseverance for long term goals”, stated in a Ted Talk. To me, this means that grit is having the stamina to work for a long time to achieve something. It’s having the power to keep trying for a long time, even if you’re thrown back.…

Lastly, maintaining a growth mindset is the keystone to success in the workplace. Dr. Carol Dweck concluded in the book "Mindset" that a growth mindset is the belief that anything is possible, learning is endless and challenges are opportunities to grow. Being outside the comfort zone means possible failure, subsequently learning from mistakes and moving forward without fear of failing again. Alternatively, a fixed mindset is the state of mind that there is nothing else to learn and challenges are threatening. The importance of having a growth mindset is to have willingness to learn new technology, face challenges, and improve communication techniques within the workplace.…

    Jealousy in Othello

Othello's jealousy against Desdemona is perhaps the strongest emotion incurred in the play. The jealousy he experiences turns him insane with rage, and he loses all ability to see reason. The first instance that instills doubt in Othello's mind is Brabantio's warning "Look to her, Moor, if thou hast eyes to see:/She has deceived her father, and may thee" (1.3.292-293). This early seed of doubt allows Iago to play on Othello's jealous nature, and concoct a plan to take advantage of Othello. Iago slowly leaks his poison into Othello and soon has the result he desires, Othello is overcome with jealousy. Othello continuously denies his jealousy, but it is apparent that he is losing his mind with the thought of Desdemona's unfaithfulness. He speaks to Iago saying "No Iago;/I'll see before I doubt; when I doubt, prove;/And on the proof, there is no more but this,--/Away at once with love or jealousy!" (3.3.189-192) The fact that he believes that his wife is unfaithful with only insinuations put forth by Iago shows the fact that he is prone to jealousy. Soon after, with Iago's "help" he believes to see undeniable proof that Desdemona is unfaithful with the loss of the handkerchief. Othello experiences jealousy so strong that he delves…

Shakespeare’s diction for Iago arouses the idea of suspicion and jealousy in Othello; at first, Iago speaks only the word “jealousy” (167) fixing it into Othello’s imagination then reminds Othello of Desdemona’s deception of her own father “She did deceive her father, marrying you, / And when she seemed to shake and fear your looks, / She loved them most” further planting seeds of suspicion into Othello’s mind as the implication is clear, where Shakespeare’s choice of words, does not need Iago to state it’s true meaning: If Desdemona can deceive her own flesh and blood, she can easily deceive her husband. However, as soon as Iago states his thoughts with Othello, he back tracks what he says “But I am much to blame. / I humbly do beseech you of your pardon / For too much loving you” bringing about once again Iago’s duplicitous nature.…

    Othello vs. Iago

Othello portrays himself as frank and sincere, while on the other hand Iago acts as the good guy but in the end backstabs the people who trust him. Othello demonstrates to his self and others his honesty. For example, when Othello explains to the Duke about their nuptials between him and Desdemona he nobly says, “That I have ta’en away this old man’s daughter, It is most true; true that I have married her” (I iii 93-34). Othello delineates his trustworthiness because he doesn’t try to keep the marriage a secret and tells the Duke up-front when he asks. In addition, he is straightforward to others when Iago warns Othello about Brabantio finding out about the marriage and tells him to go inside and he says, “Not i. I must be found. My parts, my title, and my perfect soul Shall manifest me rightly. Is it they?” (I ii 35-37). The general of the Venetian army is confident in himself that his service and stately fall will cause everything to calm down, he is also certain of his worthiness to Desdemona and that he deserves to have her and her love. Iago is pleased with his deceitful plans and sits back and savors the many lies he has told. For example, Iago shows his despise in integrity by whispering to himself that, “I am not…

Iago is an extremely smart man and a good con artist. He was able to create doubt in Othello’s head about if Desdemona could be trusted. Iago made Othello see Desdemona as a liar and a cheater, when she is actually none of those things. This reminds me of The Wife’s Lament that we read earlier this year. The woman’s brother in law tells his brother all these stories about her cheating. She ends up being exiled because her husband believes his brother instead of her. It is kind of the same thing with Desdemona and Iago is the evil brother in law who is spreading all of these rumors. Instead of her being sent away to exile, Iago is going to end up getting Desdemona killed.…

    * He starts off by hinting that he knows more than Othello about the ways of the Venetian people, he says “I know our country disposition well”(III.iii), subtly reminding Othello of his difference and isolation. He then reminds Othello of Brabantio’s claim that Desdemona was initially repulsed by him as he says “she seem’d to shake and fear your looks”(III.iii). Othello acknowledges this point remarking “And so she did”. This is a clear sign that Othello’s faith in Desdemona begins to erode. Picking up on this anxiety, Iago then exploits it further by implying a sexual perversion in Desdemona and Othello’s union when he says Desdemona has “a will most rank”(I.iii) and…
