Writing in the University The formula of a well-constructed English academic paper includes a clear, straightforward goal, the appropriate features using MLA format, and is relatable to outside of the academic setting. From analyzing a few academic papers and interviewing an English professor, Dr. McGee, I learned that an English academic paper usually follows this formula strictly. When writing an English paper, the goal and purpose go hand-in-hand in depicting the writer’s argument and/or point of view of a subject. Dr. McGee clarified that the goal of the paper must be insightful, in which the main thought is accurately understood and perceived clearly. Writing in the English discipline compares to writing outside of the academic setting in that writing in “the real world” consists of book reviews, news articles, journalism, conference presentations, blogging, etc. Writing in the English discipline usually allows the writer to write more freely and explain his/her own ideas. For example, if one were to become a book reviewer or a journalist, he/she would be expected to address their opinion. However, if one were to become a current event columnist, he/she would be expected to strictly jot down the facts. Writing an essay in the English discipline generally follows the routine of containing a visible goal, certain applicable features, and has the ability to strengthen your intelligence outside of the academic setting. If asked to give advice to future students studying the field of English, I would respond by explaining the magnitude of worth in following the directed format and to always use quotations
