Finally, I’m leaving. Within the past few days I have been gathering food and goods for the trip to Rome. I'm very nervous, I've never been that far away from home. Late last night I said bye to my wife and two children, my wife was very scared, for I would be gone for much longer than a year, I did not want to leave, but it was my duty. The ravenous terrain ahead of me now is astounding, there are steep mountains, vast deserts and I am going to mosey through it all with just my camel and I. I hope to make it to Sorrento, but I doubt I will make it that far, but if I do make it, it will be valuable information for the empire.
Journal Entry #2: June 1, 200, Evening, Dunhuang
Dunhuang is a great oasis, I love it. After what seemed like an eternity in a never ending desert, the Gobi desert, I was finally at an oasis. Once I had seen Dunhuang, from a kilometer off, I started running, running s fast as I could, for it was dry and hot. I have already ate a lot of the food I packed, so I will have to trade some of my silk and get some more. The heat, the sun, and the slow movement of my camel makes me tires, very tired. I've been told by usuals to the route that travelers who faint are left behind by their camels. I write to live.
