Fashion in ancient Egypt has many similarities and differences to modern day America. In general, ancient Egypt has been known for its large amounts of makeup and cosmetics. Similarly, footwear like sandals was a popular thing back in ancient times, that we still wear today. Differently, they had odd restrictions exposing the chest. Fashion in general is a very diverse topic filled with interesting facts. In general, fashion in ancient Egypt included huge amounts of makeup, from eyeliners called kohl, using malachite to make eyeshadow, and to making lipstick and blush from red ochre. They used a plant called henna to make colors and makeup!
But, makeup was also used to make help others identify their specific class, the more makeup you wore the higher your class. As a sign of them being clean and intelligent, the Egyptians decided to shave. The Egyptians bathed everyday and applied heavy makeup because of how much they respected their bodies. Cosmetics weren’t the only thing that was diverse. Royalty fashion was another diverse subject. Royalty adorned themselves with jewelry, beautiful wigs, interesting footwear, and makeup of all kinds. On special occasions the royal king and queen would wear decorative ceremonial clothing filled with feathers. Also, the pharaoh wore Nemes crown and a false beard. And most of their outfits, ceremonial or not, are made of nice linen, elaborate jewelry, and beautiful wigs for the women. The only people that had very colorful clothing were the rich.
