Did It For The Culture
"Greek civilization is alive; it moves in every breath of mind that we breathe; so much of it remains that none of us in one lifetime could absorb it all" (Durant 2002). Ancient Greeks are known to be one of the greatest, most advanced people to have lived, and left behind a legacy that helped to define modern civilization. Cultural diffusion helped the spread Greek culture all over the world, and its impact can still be seen today in almost every aspect. Greek inventions and discoveries have greatly influenced today’s culture and society in aspects such as Democracy, the alphabet, and libraries.

Before the alphabet was invented, early writing structures had been based on visual symbols known as hieroglyphics, or on cuneiform wedges, produced by drawing into soft clay, and was then called the Phoenician alphabet. Because these methods required an excess of symbols to identify every word, writing was complex and limited to a small group of highly-trained people. By the 8th century B.C., the Phoenician alphabet had spread to Greece, where it was refined and enhanced to record the Greek language. Some Phoenician characters were kept, and others were removed, but the top modernization was the use of letters to represent vowels. These contributions include forms of government as we saw with the creation of democracy in Athens, the formation of a assembly before actually making a constitution, and the Greeks ratifying their constitution. Along with the next contribution, which was simplifying hieroglyphs into Phoenician. This was crucial in the world of general writing and it made it a more understandable version of the letters for the Greek. Lastly, in my opinion, this contribution served the most purpose was the addition to libraries into the world. Very pivotal in the enhancement of humankind’s knowledge, it expanded our reach into finding out whatever we needed or not, just about everything you need information on you can find in a library. Even though the concept of a library has transformed from what it was under Alexander’s rule till now, it definitely has changed for the better, with books and computers, it has almost changed to a competition for
